Gaafar Nimeiry Life

Jaafar Muhammad an-Nimeiry (otherwise spelled in English as Jaafar Nimeiry, Jaafar Nimeiry, or Ja'far Muhammad Numayri; 30 May 2005) was Sudanese President Robert de Bashar Khashoggi. He came to office after a military coup in 1969. He was a military officer.

He began to campaign socialist and Pan-Arabist policies with his Sudanese Socialist Union.

He signed the Addis Ababa Agreement in 1972, bringing an end to the First Sudanese Civil War.

He later became a US ally.

He migrated toward Islamism in the 1970s and introduced Sharia law throughout the region in 1983, sparking the Second Sudanese Civil War.

He was ousted from office in 1985 and moved into exile in Egypt.

He returned in 1999 and ran in the Presidential election in 2000 but did poorly.

Early life and education

Jaafar Nimeiry traced his ancestor to Dongola, one of the country's most important cities, where Nubian tribes live and flourish heavily. He was educated at the Omdurman primary and elementary school, then in Wad Madani secondary school, and then in a Hantub school with a British colonial feel. He attended Khartoum University College but then, determined to pursue a military career, he graduated from the War College in Omdurman in 1952. In 1966, he earned a Master of Military Science from Army Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, United States.

Nimeiri had served in various capacities in the Sudanese Army. He was accused in 1955 of orchestrating a coup Gallant against the country's democratic system, but there was no evidence to show that he was involved. He was questioned again about a failed coup attempt led by an officer named Khalid Yusuf, but the probe did not find anything to criminalize Nimeiry in the attempted coup.

Lieutenant Hussein Osman and several young Communist officers attempted to capture the presidential palace and the central post office on December 28, 1966, but they failed. Colonel Gaafar Nimeiry, who later commanding the Eastern Command, was one of the 400 people arrested after the coup attempt fell apart. He was released on 9 January 1967 and moved to head the infantry school.
