Early life
Funmi Iyanda was born in Lagos to Gabriel and Yetunde Iyanda's families. Her father was from Ogbomoso, and her mother was from Ijebu-Ode. She grew up in the Lagos, Mainland region; however, her mother died when she was seven years old. She attended the African Church Princess Primary School in Akoka, Nigeria, and the Herbert Macaulay School in Lagos, Nigeria, for her primary education and her secondary education. She then enrolled at the University of Ibadan, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Geography.
Personal life
Funmi Iyanda is a member of the African Leadership Institute, Tutu Fellow, and a member of the ASPEN Institute's Forum on Communications and Society.
As she returned from a five-day UN advocacy trek up Mount Kilimanjaro in 2012, she was lauded by Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola for her contribution to gender activism. The climb was organized by the United Nations to raise global awareness of its campaign to End Violence Against Women and Girls, bringing together climbers from more than 32 African nations in a historic advocacy journey.
Funmi Iyanda served on the board of Farafina Trust and Positive Impact Youth Network. In January 2012, she appeared in a series of demonstrations in Occupy, Nigeria. The demonstrations were designed to prevent the government's introduction of the government's fuel subsidy removal policy.
Funmi Iyanda was lauded by former Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola for joining with the United Nations (UN) and other African women by scaleing Mount Kilimanjaro as a way to raise funds for the campaign to eliminate violence against women and the girl child in Africa.
