Berry appeared on the third episode of Saturday Night Live in 1975, early in his career. He appeared on Soul Train again, was also featured in the program's signature line dance segment performing the famous early 1970s dance step "the slo-mo."
On ABC's "What's Happening," Berry's character Freddie "Rerun" Stubbs gained more fame. This program aired from 1976 to 1979 when he was in his mid-20s. The role was originally supposed to be performed by a small and white actor. Because the individual had to repeat all of his classes during summer school, he was chosen for Rerun sobriquet. With a signature red beret, suspenders, and dance moves he used during his time with The Lockers, he became one of the show's best characters. Berry returned to reprise his role in the series What's Happening Now! in 1985, he appeared as Rerun. He was shot before the first season due to a salary dispute, but he requested that he get more money than the majority of the cast.
Berry suffered with heroin and alcohol abuse throughout his career and life. “I was a millionaire by the time I was 29 years old,” he told People magazine in 1996, but then the pressures of success brought him to me. The fat jokes got to me. In a 1996 interview, he said he had been playing heroin and alcohol since he was a boy, but as he became more popular, he could afford more medications. Berry had attempted suicide three times before but then recovered and spent his time visiting numerous cathedrals.
Berry became a motivational speaker and Baptist minister in the 1990s and shed 100 pounds after being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
