RICHARD LITTLEJOHN: What really offends me is everyone taking offence these days

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 26, 2024
When I read that the expression 'back in the day' was now considered beyond the pale, I thought to myself: About time, too. It's a horrible Americanism which has crossed the pond and wormed its way into our own, original version of the English language. What does it mean? Which particular 'day'? What's wrong with 'in the 1970s' or 'once upon a time' for that matter? Same goes for 'issues' instead of good, old-fashioned 'problems', 'train station' for 'railway station' and 'delivery' in the political sense, not a bloke in a white van turning up with a package from Amazon or a leg cutter from the Pavilion End.

Hundreds of mourners remember popular traveller 'Big Daddy' at funeral led by Rolls Royce procession with a gold coffin and floral tributes of a Greggs store, a bottle of Bailey's and his lucky lottery numbers after his death from cancer aged 68

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 9, 2024
Hundreds of mourners dressed in green descended on Cardiff today for a Rolls Royce-led procession in memory of one of the city's most renowned travellers. James Coffey - known fondly as Jim or 'Big Daddy' - died last month aged 68, after being diagnosed with cancer which had spread to his brain. His friends and family took over the Welsh capital today for his funeral, which included a host of quirky floral tributes marking his favourite things - such as a bottle of baileys, a Greggs store and his lucky lottery numbers. One of the most stunning tributes was an image of a stairway to heaven and depictions of Jim in the clouds with his late wife Agnes and their 14-year-old daughter Helen, who died suddenly in an accident in 2006. Jim's gold coffin was taken out from the service to My Way by Frank Sinatra, and driven to his burial plot at Western Cemetery by one of nine Rolls Royce vehicles decorated in Irish flags. The well-attended procession and service led to wide-spread disruption across the city, following earlier warnings by South Wales Police, as members of the wider traveller community came to pay their respects. Jim had 23 grandchildren and was known as 'Big Daddy' because being called 'granddad'' made him feel old. He was recognised for his work ethic and his dedication to his family, as well as his passion for his Irish heritage.

The Tropicana hotel and casino is a prime example of why the Nevada city has gathered its fame despite its murky links to the mob and legal issues for its owners. It was the city's most expensive property when it first opened in 1957, and it quickly became the epitome of Hollywood glamour. It was synonymous with glitz and glamor for decades; it regularly hosted A-list celebrities in its showroom and was the hotel that James Bond favored in the famous 1971 film Diamonds Are Forever. However, the opulent resort suffered from a slew of scandals that ultimately tarnished its opulent image.
