Professional career

In the first round (20th overall) of the 2018 NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions selected Ragnow. Ragnow was the first center drafted in 2018 and the second interior lineman drafted. The Detroit Lions announced Ragnow to a four-year, $11.78 million deal, with $9.21 million guaranteed and a signing bonus of $6.64 million.

Although Ragnow was assigned chiefly as a center during his collegiate career, the Detroit Lions immediately switched him to offensive guard. After Travis Swanson's departure, the Lions had Graham Glasgow slated to be the starting center. Ragnow was the starting left guard for the regular season, according to head coach Matt Patricia. Taylor Decker, Rick Wagner, right guard T. J. Lang, and center Graham Glasgow all started with offensive tackles, including center Graham Glasgow.
