Frank Minnifield (born January 1, 1960, Lexington, Kentucky) is a former American football player who played defensive back for the Cleveland Browns from 1984 to 1992.

High school career

Minnifield attended Henry Clay High School in Lexington, Kentucky.

College career

At just 5'9" and 140 pounds, he hopped aboard the University of Louisville's football team, winning a scholarship for his final three years. He led the nation in average kickoff returns (30.4) as a kid in 1981 and led his team in punt returns as a senior.

Professional career

Minnifield joined the Chicago Blitz (later the Arizona Wranglers) of the USFL in 1982 after graduating from high school. He successfully sued the Wranglers for the right to play in the NFL, and subsequently signed as a free agent for the Browns in 1984. Minnifield made a name for himself in Cleveland's cornerback, winning the Pro Bowl for the fourth year in a row from 1986 to 1989. He was named to the NFL 1980s All-Decade Team by voters of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, known for his ferocious bump-and-run coverage and hard hitting style. The Dawg Pound cheering section at Cleveland Stadium was named by him and fellow cornerback Hanford Dixon.
