Bernard Darwin, a golf writer, was her elder brother. She was born in Cambridge, among a large social network of aunts, uncle, and cousins, and she was educated privately. She was referred to her family before her marriage as "FCD" and her husband Francis Cornford was known as "FMC" because of the similarity of her first name, father's, and husband's.
