Frances Cornford Life

Frances Crofts Cornford (née Darwin; 30 March 1886 to 1960) was an English poet; she was known as "FCD" before her marriage and her husband's before his marriage; after her marriage, she was known as "FCC" and her husband Francis Cornford was described as "FMC" before her marriage.

Sir Francis Darwin, the son of Charles Darwin, was described as "Frank" or "Uncle Frank" by her family.

Life

Ellen Wordsworth Crofts (1856-1903), a botanist Francis Darwin and Newnham College colleague, was born into the Darwin—Wedgwood family. She was the granddaughter of British naturalist Charles Darwin. Bernard Darwin, a golf writer, was her elder brother. She was born in Cambridge, among a large social network of aunts, uncle, and cousins, and she was educated privately. She was referred to her family before her marriage as "FCD" and her husband Francis Cornford was known as "FMC" because of the similarity of her first name, father's, and husband's. Sir Francis Darwin, the son of Charles Darwin, was known as "Frank" or "Uncle Frank" to their families.

Frances Darwin married Francis Cornford, a classicist and poet, in 1909.

They had five children:

She is buried at the Ascension Burial Ground in Cambridge, where she is in the same grave as her father Sir Francis Darwin. Ellen Wordsworth Darwin, née Crofts, is buried in St. Andrews Church's churchyard in Girton, Cambridgeshire.
