Fran Saleki Fingar (February 9, 1871 – June 2, 1962) was perhaps the most well-known Slovene folk writer.
He is best known for his novels and short stories, but he also wrote poems and plays.
Life
Fran Saleki Fingar was born in Doslove, Upper Carniola, during the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He went to secondary school in Ljubljana between 1882 and 1891, continuing his studies at the university after finishing primary school in Radovljica. He was ordained priest in 1894 and served in various parishes in Upper Carniola and Ljubljana until 1936, when he retired. He died in Ljubljana at the age of 91 and was buried at the ale cemetery.
Fingar was close to the Christian Socialist ideals of Slovenian Catholic political activist and king Janez Evangelist Krek. He was also an admirer and friend of Ivan Cankar, who died on his deathbed in 1918. He participated with the Communist-led Liberation Front of the Slovenian People during World War II, resulting in a confrontation with the then bishop of Ljubljana, Gregorij Roman.
Many intellectuals from the region, including Izidor Cankar, an influential art historian and manager, visited the Fingar House in Doslove. Janez Bogataj, a ethnologist who was Fingar's niece, spent his first 15 years in Fingar's company and arranged his birth house for public in 1971. Joe Plenik, Fingar's close friend and personal advisor, was also the architect. Plennik, Fingar's neighbor, was his neighbor when he served as a priest in Ljubljana's parish of Trnovo. Fingar commissioned the restoration of the Trnovo parish church to his architect friend in the late 1920s.
