Foni Tissen Life

Foni (Alphonse) Tissen (1909-1995) was a Luxembourg schoolteacher and artist best known for his hyperrealistic, grimly humourous paintings, many of which were self-portraits.

Early life and education

Tissen was born in Rumelange, Luxembourg's south of Luxembourg, on June 3rd 1909. He attended the Lycée Poincaré in Nancy before attending painting and architecture at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris after primary school in Rumelange. There, he met Auguste Trémont, not only as a key advisor but also a close friend for the remainder of his life. He began his travels in 1929 on a long journey on a passenger liner before returning to Munich and Brussels a few years later.

Foni Tissen Career

Career

He represented Luxembourg at the 1939 New York World's Fair in 1939, alongside other artists. He returned to Luxembourg, where he had intended to be a tutor, but discovered that his French credentials were not legitimate and that he would have to resit his school leaving certificate before being accepted. He was deported alongside seven other teachers to the Hinzert concentration camp in September 1942, triggering an ironic degree of introspection.

He taught at the lycée for boys in Esch-sur-Alzette, where he greatly impressed his students. His art was not limited to painting, but rather to mosaics, frescos, stained glass windows, and ceramics, who was convinced that art in all its forms could contribute to social cohesion. Posters, plaques, flags, logos, medals, and stamps were made in his workshop, some of which are still in use today. He became a member of several cultural organisations, including Art Vivant in Differdange and Amitiés Françaises du Val de Kayl, as an outstanding public speaker.
