Hans Erni Life

Hans Erni (February 21, 1909 – March 21, 2015) was a Swiss graphic designer, painter, illustrator, engraver, and sculptor. He studied art at Académie Julian in Paris and later in Berlin, admiring artists such as Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. He is best known for his illustration of postage stamps, his lithographs for the Swiss Red Cross, his service on the Olympic Committee, as well as his activism.

A mural titled Switzerland, his 1939 works and first major public display, was in Zürich: "Vacation Land of the People" was commissioned and displayed for the national exhibition. The Hans Erni Museum, which is located in Lucerne's grounds, houses a large collection of artwork. He also created ceramics and theatre costumes and sets.

In the 1940s, he made Swiss bank notes, but after the notes were already printed, they were never released because a State Council member of Lucerne chastised Erni as a communist.

However, Erni was never a member of any national party.

He was granted honorary citizenship of Lucerne in 2004.

He was given the SwissAward for lifetime achievement on January 10, 2009. About 300 posters and several murals have been produced throughout his career, including for the 1980 Salon international de l'automobile, Red Cross, IOC, United Nations, and ICAO. He illustrated about 200 books and produced 90 Postage stamps and 25 medals.

However, federal Councillor Philipp Etter did not authorize his participation in the Biennale of So Paulo. He painted African themes after a stay in Mauritania and Guinea.
