Florence Bates Career

Life and career

In San Antonio, Texas, where her father was the owner of an antique store, Bates was the second child born to Jewish immigrant parents. She earned a mathematics degree from the University of Texas at Austin, which she taught.

She met and married Joseph Ramer, her first husband, in 1909, and gave up her career to raise their daughter. She began to study law after the marriage ended in divorce and passed the bar examination in 1914 at the age of 26. She was one of the first female attorneys in her state and served in San Antonio for four years.

After the death of her parents, Bates left the legal profession to help her sister's antique store run. She was born bilingual (English—Spanish) radio commentator whose aim was to promote good relations between the US and Mexico. Florence closed the antique store in 1929 after the stock market crash and the death of her sister's sister. William F. Jacoby, a wealthy businessman, married the antique shop. As he lost his fortune, the couple moved to Los Angeles and opened a bakery, which proved a profitable venture. In the 1940s, it was sold in Germany.

Bates auditioned for and secured the role of Miss Bates in a Pasadena Playhouse adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma in the mid-1930s. When she decided to continue working with the company, she changed her name to that of the first character she had played on stage. In 1939, she was introduced to Alfred Hitchcock, who played her in her first big screen role, Mrs. Van Hopper, in Rebecca (1940).

Over the course of the next 13 years, Bates appeared in more than 60 films. Kitty Foyle, Love Crazy, The Moon, and Sixpence, Mr. Lucky, Mr. Lucky, Since You Went Away, Kismet, Saratoga Trunk, Winter Meeting, I Remember Mama, A Letter to Three Wives, and Les Misérables are among her film credits. In television, Bates appeared on The Hank McCune Show on television and performed as a guest on I Love Lucy, My Little Margie, I Married Joan, and Our Miss Brooks.
