Ferde Grofe Life

Ferde Grofé (March 27, 1892 – April 3, 1972) was an American composer, arranger, pianist, and instrumentalist.

Ferdie Grofé went by the name Ferdie Grofé in the 1920s and 1930s.

Early life

Grofé was born in 1892 to German immigrants in New York City. He came by his voluminous musical interests. His family had four generations of classical musicians. Emil von Grofé's father, Emil von Grofé, performed mainly light opera; Elsa Johanna Bierlich von Grofé, a licensed cellist, was also a versatile music teacher who taught Ferde to play the violin and piano. Bernardt Bierlich, Elsa's father, was a cellist with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra in New York, and Julius Bierlich, Elsa's brother, was the first violinist and concertmaster of the Los Angeles Symphony.

Musical education

Ferde's father died in 1899, after which his mother accompanied Ferde to study piano, viola, and composition in Leipzig, Germany. Ferde became an expert on a variety of instruments, including piano (his favs), violin, viola (he was a violist in the LA Symphony), baritone horn, alto horn, and cornet. Ferde's foundation was established with the acquisition of musical instruments and composition, becoming first an arranger of other composers' works and then a composer in his own right.

Grofé left home at the age of 14 and worked as a milkman, truck driver, usher, elevator operator, elevator operator, and iron factory worker, as well as a piano barist and as an accompanist. He continued to study piano and violin. When he was 15 years old, he was performing with dance bands. He has also performed alto horn in brass bands. He was 17 when he wrote his first commission work, "Elks' Grand Reunion March & Two-Step."

Personal life

Despite living in New Jersey and working in and around New York City, by 1945, he had moved to Los Angeles full-time. In 1945, he sold his Teaneck, New Jersey, home.

Grofé married Mildred Fanchette Grizzelle, a soprano singer, in San Francisco, CA, on March 14, 1916, and divorced in 1928. Ruth, his second wife, who had married in 1929, filed for divorce in Las Vegas in May 1951. Anna May Lampton, his third wife, was married on the day after the divorce was approved (January 13, 1952).
