Felix Hoffmann (21 January 1868 – 8 February 1946) was a German chemist who pioneered diamorphine synthesis (independently from C.R.) Alder Wright, who synthesized it 23 years ago), was a hit on Bayer trade under the tag "heroin" in the Bayer trade.
He is also credited with synthesizing aspirin, but whether he did this on his own initiative or under Arthur Eichengrün's direction is debated.
Career
Felix Hoffmann was born in Ludwigsburg, Germany, on January 21st 1868, the son of an industrialist. He began studying chemistry at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich in 1889 and then ceased doing pharmacy at the university of Munich, where he died in 1890 with the pharmaceutical state exam. He earned the prestigious University of Munich's magna cum lauded in 1891. After completing his thesis entitled "Referring dihydroanthracene derivatives," two years later, he earned his doctorate, as well as magna cum laude. In 1894, he joined Bayer as a research chemist.
When working at Bayer under Arthur Eichenbaum, Hoffmann synthesized acetylsalicylic acid (ASA). He was able to produce ASA in a chemically pure and stable form by combining salicylic acid with acetic acid. The pharmacologist responsible for reporting these findings was skeptical at first, but when several large-scale experiments were conducted to determine the substance's effectiveness and tolerability, it was discovered to be an analgesic, antipyretic, and anti-inflammatory drug. The company then went on to produce a cost-effective manufacturing process that would allow the promising active ingredient to be produced as a pharmaceutical product. It was first introduced under the trade name "Aspirin" in 1899, first as a powder sold in glass bottles.
He also synthesized diamorphine (heroin), which was previously only available to Charles Romley Alder Wright by acetylating various molecules. It was named Heroin due to its "heroic" appearance, since it was used to treat a variety of medical disorders, from infant coughs to war injuries. It was also used to treat morphine addicts, and it would result in more opioid use and rising tolerance levels as a result of time.
Hoffmann transferred to the pharmaceutical sales department, where he remained until his retirement in 1928.
Hoffman was never married and died in Switzerland on February 8th, 1946. He had no known children.
