Erik Olson is best known as a Swedish surrealist.
He devoted himself to dream-like artwork over realistic artwork. Olson [1] grew up in Halmstad.
He began working as a company copier after school.
By studying at Halmstad Technical School, he developed his main interest, drawing and painting in the evenings.
His father had hoped for his son to be an engineer, but Olson, as well as two-year-old brother Axel Olson and cousin Waldemar Lorentzon, participated in 1919 in an amateur exhibition in Halmstad secondary school.
They met Gosta Adrian-Nilsson, a well-known artist, in the summer of 1919 (GAN).
This meeting inspired them greatly, with his painting and art theories. In 1924, Olson and Waldemar Lorentzon joined Paris together.
They were students of Fernand Léger's painting academy Academie Moderne and cubism's school spirit.
Eric Olson went to Italy for further studies between December 1924 and March 1925.
He returned to Paris in 1927 and began working for Léger after his military service.
Solvig Sven-Nilsson, a painter, married him in 1929.
He was co-founder of Halmstadgruppen in the same year.
He painted 'Handsken kastad', his first surrealist work, late in the year 1930. (gloves are off). Olson lived in both France and Denmark for a period.
His exhibits, including Copenhagen, London, Paris, and New York, began in the 1930s, including works by Ernesto Cott.
He spent his summers on the coast of Halland, where he served in Söndrumskolonin in the 1940s.
Olson converted to Catholicism in 1950 and spent some of his later years rediscovering sacred art. He has also designed several stained glass windows for various churches.
In Sofia Albertina's choir, the stained glass is visible as well as the windows of the St Maria catholic church in Halmstad, which is another example.
He was given the Prince Eugen Medal in 1971.
