Career

He received his first coveted award at the Swedish-American Exhibition in Chicago in 1911 and was elected to Associate membership in the National Academy of Design in 1911. He was appointed by the Art Students League to the directorship of the Woodstock School of Landscape Painting within a few months. The Salmagundi Club awarded him with the Vezin Prize for watercolors in 1912, as well as the first Isidor Award. Carlson received a silver medal from the Washington Society of Artists in the following year.

Carlson received a silver medal at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition of 1915. In 1918, he was awarded the Carnegie Prize and the Altman First Prize by the National Academy of Design, and in the ensuing year, he resigned as the head of Woodstock School of Landscape Painting. Carlson began teaching during the summer months at the Broadmoor Art Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. In 1922, Carlson founded the John F. Carlson School of Landscape Painting at Woodstock. The artist was elected a full member of the National Academy of Design three years ago.

Carlson published Elementary Principles of Landscape Paintings in 1928. In 1953, 1958, 1970, and 1973, the book was reprinted. The Carlson's Guide to Landscape Painting has been updated to include more recent editions.
