MATT GOODWIN: Police shutting down a Conservatism conference in the heart of the EU was a tactic straight out of the Soviet playbook

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 16, 2024
MATT GOODWIN: At 1.50pm, the police stormed in. Clad in body armour, with stun guns strapped to their belts, the officers pushed past the assembled Press, barged through the audience and silenced a democratic forum for the sharing of ideas. But this was not North Korea. This was the Carnegie Hotel in Brussels yesterday, where the annual National Conservative Conference (NatCon) had been brought to a terrifying and abrupt close on the instruction of three left-wing mayors of districts in the Belgian capital. Along with hundreds of others, I found myself holed up inside the hotel for much of the afternoon, fearing for my safety. The hours were long and tense - and, at times, dangerous. Deciding against a violent eviction of the auditorium, the police instead formed a cordon outside the hotel forbidding entrance to the premises. Through glass doors I saw some officers hiding their faces behind balaclavas. These armed agents of the EU's capital city bellowed intimidatingly that anyone who left the venue would not be allowed back inside. This was siege warfare - and hundreds of us were effectively being held prisoner. Our crime? Holding mildly Right-of-centre views.

Fury as police barricade entrance to right-wing conference in Brussels attended by Nigel Farage and Suella Braverman after local mayor issues a BAN and says 'far-right' are 'not welcome'

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 16, 2024
Police today barricaded the entrance to a right-wing political conference as a local mayor tried to shut down the event attended by Nigel Farage and Suella Braverman. The two-day 'National Conservatism' gathering in Brussels descended into chaos as authorities attempted to enforce a ban. As well as Mr Farage, the ex-UKIP leader, and Mrs Braverman, the former home secretary, other keynote speakers were due to include Hungarian PM Viktor Orban. But the future of the conference was thrown into jeopardy following an order issued by Emir Kir, the mayor of Brussels district Saint-Josse-ten-Noode. He said he was banning the event from taking place in the Belgian capital 'to guarantee public safety'. 'In Etterbeek, in Brussels City and in Saint-Josse, the far-right is not welcome,' Mr Kir added. Police were seen inside the 'Claridge' venue around midday - as Mr Farage took to the stage to deliver a speech - and officers held talks with conference organisers. It was reported that attendees had been given 15 minutes to leave the venue. But officers did not appear to force the event to shut down and speeches continued. Event organisers later claimed that police were 'not letting anyone in' and posted a video on social media of a police barricade outside the venue. Eric Zemmour, the controversial former French presidential candidate, was said to have been denied entry with his keynote address postponed 'possibly indefinitely'. In his address to the conference, Mr Farage lashed out at the 'monstrous' efforts to shut down the gathering on its first morning. He warned: 'We are up against a new form of communism.' Mrs Braverman attacked the 'thought police' who were trying to close the event.

Investigators in France are looking at the 'extreme-right back' of the parents of missing Emile Soleil

www.dailymail.co.uk, July 14, 2023
EXCLUSIVE: The parents of a missing French child, Émile Soleil (left), are being investigated by an extreme-right wing politico as fears of his safety continue. It's been almost a week since the two-year-old boy vanished without a trace from Haut-Vernet, an Alpine hamlet south of Grenoble, where he was staying with his grandparents. Investigators have ruled out no evidence, while lawyers have expanded their probe to other areas of France after a thorough search of the countryside around Vernet yielded nothing. Now Mail Online has learned that Colomban Soleil (top right), Émile's father, was jailed in 2018 for 'an attack on immigrants.'

The collection of a French cop who sparked protests by 'executing' a teenager has sparked outrage, with a total cost of €1 million

www.dailymail.co.uk, July 3, 2023
More than €1 million (almost £900,000) has been raised for a French policeman who 'executed' a teenager during a traffic stop, much more than the €189,000 donated to the victim's devastated family. On Tuesday, pan-wide riots were sparked after a cop shot Nahel Merzouk (right), a 17-year-old with an Algerian background, at point blank in the Paris suburb of Nanterre. Many, including members of Nahel's family, said the assassination was symptomatic of widespread bigotry against ethnic minorities in France, and Nahel's grandmother said she was 'heartbroken' by the policeman's unconditional love. More than 40,000 people have pledged money to the officer's online fund, which was launched on Gofundme.com by a far-right media commentator. €3,000 was the most single donation, which was anonymously given. The collection easily beat the €189,000 raised for Nahel's family, who lived with his mother Mounia (inset) on a housing estate in a west Paris suburb.

The extent of French riot unrest is shown by wild social media videos

www.dailymail.co.uk, July 3, 2023
Thousands of people have been caught in cities from Paris to Marseille, fighting with police, setting fire to buildings, and in some cases, even firing guns into the air. The unrest, sparked by Nahel M.'s police shooting, appeared to have come to a close on its sixth night, but fires and vandalism hit public buildings, cars, and municipal garbage cans around the country overnight and into Monday morning. All in all, there were 157 arrests overnight, out of a total of 3,354 arrests in all since June 27, though 45,000 officers were deployed around the country to combat violence fueled by rage over discrimination. Macron has joined forces on social media platforms that have posted shocking videos of vandalism and fires in a variety of cities. He said that Snapchat and TikTok were being used to orchestrate resistance and that they were used to organise unrest and act as conduits for copycat violence.

Mir Perwer, a famous Kurdish singer exiled in France, was also shot and killed, as was Abdullah Kizil, another dissident. All of the victims were identified by the European Kurdish Democratic Societies Congress, which is headquartered in Belgium.

With fireworks and flares lit, streets ground to a halt, and riot police deployed to quell any potential violence, each result of Morocco's surprise victory over the tournament's penultimate stage has been welcomed in the capital.
