Count Eric Stanislaus (or Stanislaus Eric) Stenbock (12 March) [O.S.] Thirlestanine Hall (Cheltenham) 1860 [O.S.] [O.S.] [1895] Withdeane Hall, Brighton, was a Baltic poet and writer of macabre fantastic fiction.
Life
Stenbock was the count of Bogesund and the heir to a house near Kolga, Estonia. He was the son of Lucy Sophia Frerichs, the daughter and heiress of Johann Andreas Frerichs, a Manchester cotton tycoon, and Count Erich Stenbock of a prominent Swedish noble family of the Baltic German House of Nobility in Reval. Catherine Stenbock, the third and last consort of Gustav Vasa and Queen consorts of Sweden, lived in Stockholm from 1552 to 1560. Baron Friedrich von Stuart (1761-1842) from Courland was Stenbock's great-grandfather (1761–1842) from Courland. Immanuel Kant, Stenbock's great-granduncle, was a great-granduncle.
When he was one year old, Stenbock's father died suddenly; his properties were held in trust for him by his grandfather Magnus. Eric's maternal grandfather died when Eric was young, 1866, giving him another trust fund.
Stenbock attended Balliol College in Oxford, but did not finish his studies. Eric was greatly inspired by Pre-Raphaelite artist and illustrator Simeon Solomon while at Oxford. He is also said to have had a friendship with composer and conductor Norman O'Neill, as well as other "new guys."
Stenbock converted to Roman Catholicism in Oxford, using the name Stanislaus. Eric was also admitted to attending a different faith every week in Oxford some years ago. He seemed to have developed a syncretist faith with elements of Catholicism, Buddhism, and idolatry at the end of his life.
Count Magnus died in 1885, and Stenbock, the family's oldest living male relative, gained the status of Count and owner of the family's estates in Estonia. Eric went to and lived in Kolga for a year and a half; he returned to England in 1887, when he sank deeper into alcoholism and heroin use.
Stenbock was behaving eccentrically. In his bedroom, he had snakes, lizards, salamanders, and toads, as well as a "zoo" that contained a reindeer, a fox, and a bear. He would always carry a dog, a monkey, and a life-sized doll when he traveled. This doll, who referred to as "the little Count"), told everyone that it was his son; he demanded that it be delivered to him daily; and when it was absent—he inquired about its wellbeing. (Stenbock's family thought an unscrupulous Jesuit had been given a substantial sum of money by the Count for the doll's "education).)
