For good, two-thirds of Britons want e-scooters to roam the streets for good

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 18, 2023
MailOnline can reveal that a cancer survivor who barely lost his foot (right) in a horrific e-scooter crash is one of millions in the United Kingdom calling for them to be banned from the streets. According to a report by the National Accident Helpline, two-thirds of Brits want e-scooters barred from public roads, while three-quarters believe a driving licence and insurance should be a condition to use one. After an e-scooter accident on October 26, 2021, cancer survivor Luke Barratt (left), from Barnsley, was in remission for leukaemia. The 32-year-old's mobility had been restricted by his leukaemia, but he hoped that by using an e-scooter, he might visit relatives who live nearby. Nevertheless, when riding the scooter, he misjudged the kerb and was thrown to the ground. His right foot was practically torn off from his ankle. In 2021, the first year on record, the number of casualties in accidents involving e-scooters increased (inset).

According to a Lime e-scooter boss, the car speed limits should be reduced to 20 mph to shield riders

www.dailymail.co.uk, February 27, 2023
Wayne Ting (inset), the CEO of Lime, the world's biggest e-scooter and e-bike rental company, has requested that traffic bosses relax speed limits, fearing that doing so would prevent riders from being killed or seriously injured on the roads. His plea comes after the number of people killed by e-scooter incidents tripled in a year, despite that fatalities climbed by 28% in a 12-month period. Despite a damning report that labeled e-scooter riders more reckless than cyclists, being five times more likely to drink alcohol and 30 times to travel helmetless (left), Mr Ting has maintained that those renting his two-wheeled cars were not to blame. It comes after a row over the number of e-bikes and e-scooters being dumping on streets in cities (right) and towns across the United Kingdom, which has caused the London council to announce that it will fine unlicensed rental companies whose dockless bikes and e-scooters are found littering streets.

Colin Moore, 38 (pictured), was arrested by officers after he was seen weaving on and off the pedestrian walkway in Bootle at 30 mph. When he was ordered to perform a blood test, he had a seizure, according to a judge. Moore, a native of Southport, Merseyside, had 2.5 micrograms of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) per litre of blood, according to a study. THC is the main active ingredient in cannabis, and the legal drug drive limit is 2mcg/l. Moore admitted to drug use and was barred from serving a year in Sefton Magistrates' court. His sentencing comes as a rise in the number of people injured by e-scooter accidents (inset), with the number of fatal accidents up by a year.

In a year, an E-scooter died in a year of 12 people in a 12-month cycle

www.dailymail.co.uk, November 25, 2022
The number of people killed by e-scooter accidents has tripled in a year, with fatalities up 22% in a 12 month period (see graph). According to new Government statistics, there were 12 deaths involving e-scooters and 1,349 accidents in the year to June. This compares to four deaths the year before as well as 978 deaths, which is much less frequent. 11 of the 12 deaths were e-scooters, although one of them was a pedestrian. Emily Hartridge, a Channel 4 and YouTube actress, was killed in what was believed to be Britain's first deadly electric scooter crash. When riding an e-scooter near her house in Battersea, south London, the 35-year-old was involved in a collision with a lorry.

According to an analysis, E-scooter riders are more risky than cyclists

www.dailymail.co.uk, August 15, 2022
It comes amid widespread skepticism about the increasing use of e-scooters in the United Kingdom, which culminated in the death of social media actress Emily Hartridge in 2019. Since 2019, Norwegian researchers investigated emergency 3,000 department attendances in Oslo due to e-scooters and bicycles. In just one of 50 accidents involving an e-scooter, the rider was riding a helmet, which can reach speeds of up to 80 miles per hour, relative to two-thirds of bike accidents. Four out of ten electric scooter owners were inebriated when they were injured, and more than six in ten were inebriated at night. In comparison, only about one in ten cyclists was inebriated at the time of their accident, and four in ten were in total darkness.
