Eli Fara (born 21 May 1967) is a well-known Albanian folk singer from Korç.
She was voted Merited Artist of Albania by the Albanian government before 1996, and is one of Albania's most popular singers.
Life and career
Fara was born in Koç, Albania, of Aromanian descent, and later became part of the People's Socialist Republic, then present Albania. She first rose to prominence as a performer of the urban folk songs of her home country. In 1988, she was invited to attend the National Folklore Festival in Gjirokastr. Albania had no recording industry to speak of before the fall of Communism, and it was also possible to buy cassette albums by a handful of artists, one of whom was Eli Fara. She has lived much of the intervening period in other countries, but her native country has remained extremely popular. She has recorded more modern music in recent years, but she also performs some of Korç's folk songs, which first attracted her to the Albanian audience. Fara was a finalist at Knga Magjike (The Magic Song) in 2012 with "Romale," a song mixed with various genres.
