Edith M. Thomas Life

Edith Matilda Thomas (August 12, 1854--1925) was an American poet who "was one of the first writers to capture effectively the excitement of the modern city."

Life

Edith Thomas, a born in Chatham Center, Ohio, was educated at Geneva, Ohio, and attended Oberlin College (though she had to drop out). She taught school for two years and then became a typesetter.

She began writing early for the local newspapers, but author Helen Hunt Jackson compelled her to submit verse to more coveted periodicals. "She captured national interest with her poetry" "According to Scribner's, The Atlantic Monthly, The Century, and other well-known magazines, her poems were published. "Enthusiastic endorsement" by Jackson earned a near-impressive literary celebrity.

"As far as I am aware, her poems are still in book form and can only be obtained in small quantities," says Canadian poet Charles G.D. Roberts, who wrote of her in 1884. These verses, which are both densely personal and open in promise, are also conspicuous; we are certainly entitled to expect so much from her genius."

In 1885, A New Year's Masque and Other Poems appeared in its first volume.

In 1887, she migrated to New York City, where she worked with Harper's and Century Dictionary. She lived in New York for the remainder of her life. Between 1890 and 1909, she published more than 300 poems, but "the demands of the leading literary journals constantly outstripped her supply."

By The New York Times, she was dubbed "one of the most influential American poets" on her death.

Her Selected Poems came out in 1926, a year after she died.
