Edimilson Fernandes Ribeiro (born 15 April 1996) is a Swiss professional footballer who plays as an attacking midfielder for Bundesliga side Mainz 05.

Fernandes was born in Sion, Switzerland, of Portuguese and Cape Verdean descent. He is the cousin of Swiss international footballer Gelson Fernandes, Manuel Fernandes, and ex-Sunderland midfielder Cabral.

Club career

Fernandes is a youth defiant from FC Sion. On June 1, 2013, he made his Swiss Super League debut against FC Zürich in a 4–2 home victory. He appeared in the first eleven and was dismissed after 53 minutes. In a 2–2 draw at home to FC Luzern, he scored his first senior goal on March 1st. Fernandes participated every minute of Sion's 2015-16 Europa League campaign, before being knocked out by Braga in the last 32. He appeared in all games for Sion's first team and 41 games for the club's under-21 team.

Fernandes signed a four-year contract with English club West Ham United for a fee of £5 million on August 25, 2016. He made his West Ham debut on September 25th, defeating Southampton 3–0 at home, and arriving as an 82nd-minute replacement for Mark Noble. Fernandes scored his first goal for West Ham in a 2–1 victory over Chelsea in the EFL Cup on October 26, 2016, earning praise from manager Slaven Bili.

Fernandes joined Fiorentina in Italy on a one-year loan contract with the option to buy on August 13.

Fernandes joined Mainz 05 in a four-year contract for an undisclosed fee. He made his full debut for the club against SC Freiburg on August 17th, playing 84 minutes of a 3–0 loss while picking up a first-half yellow card.

In the penultimate Bundesliga game of the 2019–2020 season, Fernandes scored his first goal for Mainz. In Mainz's 3–1 victory over Werder Bremen after being called on in the second half, he scored his third goal.

Fernandes went on loan to Young Boys on February 15, 2022, before the season ended.

International career

Fernandes made his debut for the Switzerland under-21 team in March 2016, defeating England 1–1 in a 1–1 draw. In his second game, on September 2nd, he scored his first international goal in a 3–0 victory over Kazakhstan in Biel/Bienne.

Fernandes received his first call-up to the senior Switzerland squad for a match against the Faroe Islands in November 2016.

In the 69th minute, he made his senior debut against them by coming off the bench in his 69th minute.

In May 2019, he competed in the 2019 UEFA Nations League Finals, where his team finished fourth.

In 2021, he was called up to the national team for the 2020 UEFA European Championship, where the team produced one of the tournament's most exciting features, winning the quarter-finals.
