Hartwell was born in Las Vegas, Nevada, and graduated from Cheyenne High School in 1996. At University of Wisconsin and Western Illinois University, he played college football.

According to court records, Lisa Wu-Hartwell and Ed Hartwell borrowed $2.9 million to buy their suburban home in June 2007. Professional career
In the fourth round of the 2001 NFL Draft, Hartwell was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens. From 2001 to 2004, he played for the Ravens. He never missed a game, though he was limited to special teams in 2001. He had 337 tackles, six sacks, and one interception during his time with the Ravens.
Hartwell became a free agent after the 2004 season and was signed by the Atlanta Falcons to a six-year, $26.25 million contract. Before being released on March 2, 2007, he spent two seasons with the Falcons as a result of injuries. He appeared in just 13 games, with 63 tackles and one suspended.
Hartwell signed with the Cincinnati Bengals on May 3, 2007. Following the preseason, however, he was released on September 1st and spent the remainder of the year out of football.
Hartwell was signed by the Oakland Raiders on May 2, 2008. Since the team signed punter Glenn Pakulak, he was released by the team on August 13.
In 2010, Hartwell signed with the Las Vegas Locomotives.
