William Edgar Buchanan II (March 20, 1903 – April 4, 1979) was an American actor with a long career in film and television, most well-known today as Uncle Joe Carson from the Petticoat Junction, Green Acres, and The Beverly Hillbillies television sitcoms of the 1960s.

Following the death of show actress Bea Benaderet, who had played Kate Bradley, on Petticoat Junction, he took over as the owner of the Shady Rest Hotel in 1968; Buchanan was the second lead since the series's inception.

In 1969, he appeared in the episode "Kathy Jo's First Birthday Party" with his real-life son, Buck (who had a cameo as a ice cream vendor).

Edgar Buchanan was also known for his important supporting role in Penny Serenade (1941), starring Irene Dunne and Cary Grant.

Early life

He was born in Humansville, Missouri, and moved with his family and his family to Oregon when he was seven years old. He obtained his DDS degree from North Pacific College School of Dentistry, which later became Oregon Health & Science University School of Dentistry in 1928. Mildred (1907–1987) and he, his classmates in dental school, were married in 1928, the year he graduated. They had one child, Buck, but they didn't have one. They went from Eugene, Oregon, to Altadena, California, where they moved their dental office. He appeared in Pasadena Playhouse as an actor. He appeared in his first film in 1939, at the age of 36, after which he turned his dentistry service over to his wife. He was a Freemason and a member of Theta Chi fraternity.

Buchanan appeared in more than 100 films, including Texas (1941), in which he played a dentist and appeared with William Holden and Glenn Ford, and later in Penny Serenade (1942) with Randolph Scott and Carolyn McCrea, McLintock (1952). (1963) with John Wayne, Move Over, Darling (1963) with Doris Day and James Garner, and Benji (1974).

Cimarron City, The Californians, and The Rifleman were two of many television series in which he appeared as a guest star. In six episodes of The Rifleman, Edgar appeared in "The Witness" (episode 119), "The Trade" (episode 23), "The Trader" (episode 24), "The Angry Man" (episode 31), and "The Angry Man" (episode 31). In addition to several other prominent roles on the show (ranging from sympathetic roles to violent villains), he portrayed Jed Christianson in the episode "Duel at Sundown" on Maverick with James Garner and Clint Eastwood. He was on Leave It to Beaver (as both "Uncle Billy" and "Captain Jack)), The Twilight Zone, Riverboat (as Wingate Pardee in the 1960 episode, "Duel on the River"), Taking Up Buddy, Bus Stop, and The Lloyd Bridges Show were among the exhibits on Leave It to Beaver.

Red Connors in the syndicated Western Hopalong Cassidy and J.J. Jackson in the CBS crime drama Cade's County were among Buchanan's regular cast members in television shows.

In all 222 episodes of Petticoat Junction, the only actor from the show to do so, as well as in 17 episodes of Green Acres: 416 and three episodes of The Beverly Hillbillies, Buchanan appeared as Uncle Joe Carson. He took over as the owner of the Shady Rest Hotel following the death of show actress Bea Benaderet, who had appeared Kate Bradley, on Petticoat Junction in 1968; Buchanan was the second lead since the series's inception. He appeared in the 1966 episode "The All Night Party" and in the 1969 episode "Kathy Jo's First Birthday Party" with his real-life son, Buck (who had a cameo as a partygoer and an ice cream vendor respectively). Higgins, the dog that portrayed the title character, was another celebrity from Petticoat Junction and he appeared together in the 1974 film Benji; the other "star" was Higgins.

Buchanan appeared on several episodes of "Tales of Wells Fargo," starring Dale Robertson. Doc Dawson, a rascally ex-outlaw, appeared in his role.

"Phantom 309" was released by Dot Records in 1967 (Dot #17047), a dot #17047) by Buchanan. With "Cotton Picker," the 45-rpm single was backed.

Buchanan died as a result of a stroke complicated by pneumonia in Palm Desert, California, and was laid to rest in the Forest Lawn - Hollywood Hills Cemetery in Los Angeles.
