Cota spent his freshman and sophomore years at Samuel J. Tilden High School in Brooklyn, New York. As a sophomore, he averaged 31.5 points, 11 assists, and six steals per game, leading his team to the New York Public School Athletic League's semifinals.
In the ninth grade, Cota's parents were involved in a car accident in Panama that would hospitalize them for several years. His mother spent a year in the hospital, and his stepfather was stuck two years in a wheelchair, and he never managed to recover leg use. He struggled to stay on track in school, but was aided by his mother's return and encouragement from his high school coach Eric Eisenberg to get him counseling and enrolling in a preparative class to get off to a new start.
He then enrolled in St. Thomas More School in Oakdale, Connecticut, where he coached his team to the New England private school championship as a child, averaging 21 points and nine assists per game. He was chosen for the United States Junior National Select Team and competed in the 1996 McDonald's All-American Game, which featured future stars Jermaine O'Neal, Stephen Jackson, Mike Bibby, and Kobe Bryant. The one-time truant high school student excelled in the classroom, eventually ending his high school career as an honor roll student.
Collegiate career
Cota is probably best known to basketball fans for his stint as point guard for the University of North Carolina (UNC) from 1996 to 2000. In his four years as a starter, Cota led the Tar Heels to three Final Fours. Cota was a member of Bill Guthridge's popular "Six Starters" rotation with Antawn Jamison, Vince Carter, Shammond Williams, Ademola Okulaja, and Makhtar N'Diaye during the 1997--1998 season.
During his college years, Cota received several awards. He was named the 1997 ACC Rookie of the Year and a 1997 Freshman All-America. On the 1997 All-ACC Freshman Team, Cota was the top vote-getter. As a sophomore (1998), junior (1999), and senior (2000), he received his second-team All-Conference award for three years in a row. He set the ACC record for most assists in a single season as a sophomore. He was named a 1999 AP All-America Team Honorable Mention. While leading UNC to another Final Four, he received three NCAA All-Regional Team selections as a senior. By the time his college career came to an end, he had been the first player in NCAA basketball to score 1,000 points and 500 rebounds in his career. In addition, he had the third most assists in a career at Carolina, and held the third highest assist total in NCAA history. Cota won 138 games without fouling out, which is remarkable.
Professional career
Since graduating from North Carolina, Cota was not drafted by the NBA. His height (6' 0") and a jump shot were cited as two major contributors to his triumph as a pro. Rather, he was drafted by the Gary Steelheads of the minor league Continental Basketball Association, where he spent the 2000–2001 season. Cota was unintentionally wrong, leading the league in 3-point shootings at 48 percent.

Cota started in St. Petersburg and algiris Kaunas, but before the season ended, he moved to Spain to play for FC Barcelona.
