Dr. Drew, an American celebrity doctor who is an internist, addiction medicine specialist, and a media personality, David Drew Pinsky (born September 4, 1958) is a psychologist who works as an internist, addiction medicine specialist, as well as a media personality.

Loveline, a nationally syndicated radio talk show, aired from 1984 to its conclusion in 2016.

On television, Dr. Drew On Call on HLN and the daytime series Lifechangers on The CW hosted Dr. Drew On Call. Early life

Pinsky was born in 1958 in Pasadena, California, to a Jewish family. Morton Pinsky (1926–2009) was a physician whose parents immigrated to the United States from Ukraine. Helene Stanton (née Eleanor Mae Stansbury; 1925–2017) was a singer and actress from Philadelphia's "highly Victorian upper-middle-class community."

Pinsky studied biology at Amherst College in 1976, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in 1980. He continued his education at the University of Southern California's Keck School of Medicine, graduating in 1984 with a Doctor of Medicine degree. He spent his time at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena and later moved to private practice.

Personal life

Pinsky married on July 21, 1991, and he and his partner, Susan Sailer, had triplets Douglas, Jordan, and Paulina.

Pinsky lives in Pasadena, California. He's been involved in fitness since his youths and does regular weight training. He also likes singing opera as his mother was a professional singer, in addition to his travelling hobby. Pinsky said on the Loveline episode on June 24, 2009, that he had torn between practicing medicine and becoming a professional opera singer at one time. Pinsky auditioned for a celebrity singing competition, but the show was postponed on his appearance after he made it clear to producers that he did not perform pop songs, but Turn Ben Stein On.

Morton Pinsky's father died of a cerebral hemorrhage on October 27, 2009. At the end of the season 3 finale of Celebrity Rehab, a title card was dedicated to him. Helene Pinsky's mother, Helene, died on June 7, 2017 at the age of 91.

Pinsky, a nonobservant Jew, admits to avoiding most Jewish practices but emphasizes the continuing interest in learning about the faith. He says that religious as well as academic studies influence his medical practice and speeches, as well as academic, and that his roots "provides indirect coloring on every answer."

Pinsky said in September 2013 that he recovered from prostate cancer surgery performed earlier this year, although Pinsky did not require chemotherapy or radiation. During episode 119 of his podcast Dr. Drew After Dark, Pinsky said his prostate cancer had recurred after it was discovered during routine blood testing that his PSA (Prostate-specific antigen) level was elevated. In July 2021, he will begin Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT).

In a 2011 interview with Kevin and Bean, Pinsky said he would consult with any media outlet, including TMZ and The National Enquirer, but not to the Los Angeles Times, because "they distort, and they deceive, and they misrepresent, and they mislead, and they take things out of context." I'm shocked at how bad their journalism is, so I stopped talking to them."

Pinsky has increasingly discussed the 'tyranny' of government overreach and the need for a "Liberty Party" on a national basis.

Pinsky told Ryan Holiday that he was researching philosopher Epictetus and recommended it to him. Holiday claims that this ignited his interest in stoic philosophy and later became the best-selling author on the New York Times.

Pinsky's dual career in medicine and mass media has required him to "navigate[e] a precarious balance of professionalism and salaciousness," as the New York Times put it in February 2008.

Pinsky began appearing in "Ask a Surgeon," a segment of a Sunday night KROQ-FM show hosted by Jim "Poorman" Trenton and "Swedish" Egil Aalvik, while still a medical student. "Ask the Surgeon" soon joined "Loveline," another Sunday night segment, into a show of its own, co-hosted by Trenton and Pinsky. Loveline went national in 1995, and the television version, hosted by Pinsky and Adam Carolla, debuted on MTV the next year.

Pinsky's "Gen-X answer to Ruth Westheimer [Dr. Ruth] was revealed on both radio and television, along with an AIDS-era, pro-safety message. The MTV show ran for four years, but the radio show continued until April 2016 with cohost Mike Catherwood.

Pinsky began Dr. Drew Live, another nationally syndicated talk radio show on which he specialized on a variety of health conditions. It came from KGIL in Los Angeles, and was originally broadcasting weekdays from 11:00 am to 1:00 p.p. PT. In December 2008, the program was cancelled.

Pinsky appeared on Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew, a reality television show involving celebrities in a drug rehab center in 2008. The program was shot at the Pasadena Recovery Center, with Pinsky as the resident medical specialist. On January 10, 2008, the series premiered on VH-1 and was revived for multiple seasons. Sober House, which began its first season in January 2009, featured celebrities from Celebrity Rehab's first two seasons, as well as celebrities from the first two seasons. Pinsky appeared in a spinoff of Celebrity Rehab, Sex Rehab, with Dr.Drew, depicting celebrities being treated for sexual dependence over the course of three weeks at the Pasadena Recovery Center in November 2009.

Dr. Drew performed an on-air ultrasound of her breasts to establish Stodden's assertion that they did not have plastic surgery. Dr. John Diaz, a plastic surgeon, undertook the ultrasound.

Pinsky appears on several news shows where he often speaks to people about the occurrence of controlled drugs and high-profile individuals. He has often expressed concern about the deaths of people like Anna Nicole Smith, Heath Ledger, and Michael Jackson, arguing that their lives should serve as examples of the danger of misusing drugs.

Pinsky has appeared on several television shows (either portraying himself or a fictional character) in the space Ghost Coast to Coast, Dawson's Creek, Family Guy. The Adam Carolla Project, Minoriteam, Robot Chicken, My Gym Partner's a Monkey, Code Monkeys, and The Midnight Gospel are among the Monkeys' Monkeys. Pinsky has appeared in the films New York Minute and Wild Hogs.

Pinsky began hosting his own show, Dr. Drew On Call, on HLN, which focuses on news regarding health and addiction issues in early 2011. HLN and Pinsky announced on August 26, 2016 that the show's last episode would be scheduled on September 22 of this year.

Pinsky appeared in season two of The Masked Singer on October 9, 2019. He was named "Eagle" in the film.

Pinsky made a string of remarks about the COVID-19 pandemic from February to March 2020, where he downplayed the severity of the disease, claiming that it was not as bad as the flu and suggested that it was a "press-induced panic." Pinsky apologised in April 2020 and begged people to follow Anthony Fauci's instructions.

Pinsky has been worried about homelessness in Los Angeles County for many years, but the majority of people on the streets, namely, the government has argued that this is a housing issue, but the bulk, not necessarily. So, even if they fix the housing issue, they'll still have the same problem on the streets." He has also been critical of certain aspects of the Lanterman-Petris-Short Act, limiting the possibility of intervention if physically impaired people are unable to care for their own needs. In a video interview, Pinsky said in an interview that he had correctly predicted a typhus outbreak in 2019 in the county as a result of rodents attracted to homeless encampments.

Kathryn Barger, a member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, nominated Pinsky to a local Los Angeles homeless commission in April 2021. Local homeless rights campaigners and a Twitter campaign blasted him. Although local board appointments are rare, more than 100 people have written public comments urging supervisors not to allow Pinsky. In favor of his appointment, the board received less than five public comments. Pinsky may have underestimated the number of homeless people with mental disorders or heroin use problems, according to critics. Others, including homeless advocate and charity leader Rev. Andy Bales, defended Pinsky, dubbed the hashtag campaign and public commenting a "echo chamber." Pinsky's nomination was ultimately withdrawn.

Curtis Giesen co-founded DrDrew.com, an internet-based community and advice portal for teenagers in 1999. Garage.com was one of the company's early backers. DrDrew.com was out of funds quickly, and the company was sold to Sherwood Partners Inc., a corporate restructuring company that sold the company's assets to Dr.com in November 2000. Pinsky re-acquired the site in 2013 and began distributing his Dr. Drew Podcast and general information about his books, radio, and TV shows, as well as hosting his own podcast, The Dr. Drew Podcast. Pinsky revealed on The Adam Carolla Show in September 2012 that he will be doing a podcast on the Carolla Digital network.

Pinsky wrote Cracked: Putting Broken Lives Together Again in 2003, reminiscing about his time as the medical director of the Las Encinas Hospital drug rehab clinic in Pasadena, California. He also contributed to the book When Painkillers Become Dangerous: What Everyone Should Do About OxyContin and Other Prescription Drugs, which was released in 2004.

Pinsky appears on college campuses and other public venues in addition to his media appearances. Carolla and Pinsky were teamed as hosts of Loveline's Lovelines, Carolla and Pinsky spoke at colleges.

Pinsky, the voice of 1-800-GET-THIN, argued for lap band surgery on radio ads and in a recording played for those who dialed 1-800-GET-THIN.
