Julie Dorne Brown (born 27 August 1963), also known as Downtown Julie Brown, is a London-born actor, television presenter, SiriusXM DJ, and former MTV VJ.
Brown is best known as the host of the television music show Club MTV, which aired from 1987 to 1992.
Personal life
In 2001, Brown married film director and former CEO of Intermedia Martin Schuermann. They and their daughter live in Marina del Rey, California.
Life and career
Brown's father was Jamaican, and her mother was British. Brown has six siblings. Her father served in the Royal Air Force and she grew up on air force bases around the world, including Singapore and Cyprus, before returning to the United Kingdom, where they settled in Bridgend, Wales.
She went on to win the World Disco Dancing Championship in 1979 after winning the UK Disco Dancing Championships. Brown began working on British television as a host and interviewer on a number of children's shows, including the long-running show Crackerjack. Brown appeared on Top of the Pops in the early 1980s as a member of the dance troupe Zoo.
Brown began as a host on the pan-European music network Music Box and then moved to the United States and became an MTV VJ and began to host the Club MTV show in the late 1980s. The show had a similar appearance to American Bandstand's, but it had an exclusive collection of dance artists. After she mistakenly read the T-shirt of a camera crewmember who was holding the cue cards while on live television, she stole "Wubba Wubba Wubba."
MTV Capital capitalized on the muddle between Downtown Julie Brown and comedian Julie Brown by sending them together as reporters for MTV News as well as "facing" each other on both their shows (Club MTV and Just Say Julie).
Later career
Brown left MTV and moved to ESPN, doing on- and off-field interviews with football stars. Brown then migrated to Los Angeles to host the E Entertainment channel's gossip show. She appeared on syndicated radio show American Dance Traxx in March 1992 until its final broadcast in December 1993.
