Dorothee Pesch (born 3 June 1964), also known as Doro Pesch or Doro, is a German heavy metal singer-songwriter who served as front-woman of the heavy metal band Warlock.
Doro's contributions to music and culture, as well as her publicized personal life, made her a global figure in metal culture for over three decades.
Doro has also been associated with the touring band accompanying the artist, whose members have continually changed in more than 20 years of uninterrupted attendance, with bassist Nick Douglas and drummer Johnny Dee having the most consistent presences. Doro began her career in garage bands in Düsseldorf, Germany, and she gained media fame and commercial success with Warlock in the 1980s.
Warlock was the first in the United States to open, when the band underwent several line-up changes and Pesch was the only original member of the band.
Doro began her career as a solo female in order to avoid legal confrontations between her record label PolyGram and her former boss.
She and her co-producers Joey Balin and Gene Simmons released two albums in the United States, but not the ones she aspired for. Her record label relegated her performances solely to the European region, where she stayed to tour extensively during the 1990s amid the rise of grunge and alternative rock.
Despite living and recording her albums in the United States, she maintained her reputation as a top charting artist in Germany.
When classic heavy metal regained the public's favor, she returned to tour all over the country and inspired many new female metal artists.
Doro has also been known for her duets, live and in studio with other singers and musicians of the metal scene, whom she has been friends in her long career. She has released seventeen studio albums, the most notable being Forever Warriors, Forever United in 2018.
Doro continues her recording career and is a well-known touring artist around the world.
When she is not on tour, she lives in New York City.
Personal life
Doro Pesch has always been reserved and cautious in guarding her anonymity off-stage. She deliberately chose not to marry or have children in order to devote all of her time to her musical career and her fans. The lyrics of the song "You Are My Family," which opens the album Warrior Soul, exemplify this decision. Barbara's mother, Barbara, runs the Doro fan club following her father's death in 2000.
She has homes in Düsseldorf, Germany, and Long Island, New York, where she remained when not on tour until Hurricane Irene destroyed her house in August 2011. In 1991, she was granted a green card to live and work in the United States. Doro owns, as well as former Die Krupps members Chris Lietz and Jürgen Engler, an Atom H recording studio in Düsseldorf, where she has recorded some of her songs.
Doro is a vegan. Following models, she creates and uses synthetic materials that mimic leather, as in tune with her PETA experience. She also supports Terre des Femmes, a non-profit group that assists women and girls in need around the world. Doro has competed in Thai boxing, a hobby she began playing in 1995. In her limited free hours, she enjoys graphic arts and painting.
