Donald Martin "Smokie" McLeod (August 24, 1946 – March 11, 2015) was a Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender who served briefly in the National Hockey League and six years in the World Hockey Association. McLeod's NHL career included 18 games with the Detroit Red Wings and Philadelphia Flyers over the 1970-72 seasons. McLeod was signed by the Houston Aeros in 1972, where he spent two seasons with him.

The 1973-74 season was his best year.

He was named to the First All-Star team after winning the Ben Hatskin trophy as the new league's top goalie.

The Aeros won the WHA playoff championship in the best professional season (Avco Trophy).

In the 1974 Summit Series against the Soviet Union, McLeod was selected to represent Canada (WHA) against the Soviet Union.

McLeod signed with the Vancouver Blazers in 1974, where he appeared in a league record 72 games.

McLeod followed the franchise to Calgary and was the Calgary Cowboys' main goalie for the next two seasons.

McLeod was drafted by the Quebec Nordiques in 1977, where he played in just 7 games before being assigned to the Edmonton Oilers, where he lasted out the 1977-78 season and his professional career. McLeod was the holder of numerous WHA titles, seasons, and playoff goaltending records.

He died in 2015 at the age of 68.

Playing career

McLeod's professional career began with several clubs in the minor Central Professional Hockey League and American Hockey League before being called up for two seasons in the NHL, totaling 18 games, with the Detroit Red Wings and Philadelphia Flyers in the 1970-1972 and 1971–72 seasons.

McLeod was signed by the Houston Aeros, where he spent two seasons with the WHA in 1972. The 1973-74 season was his best year ever. He was the second winner of the Ben Hatskin Trophy as the WHA's top goalie and was selected to the First All-Star team. The Aeros captured the Avco Trophy as the WHA playoff champions, kicking off their best professional season. In September 1974, McLeod was selected to represent Canada in the 1974 Summit Series against the Soviet Union. McLeod joined the Vancouver Blazers in 1974-1975, where he appeared in a league record 72 games. McLeod followed the franchise to Calgary and was the Calgary Cowboys' main goalie for the next two seasons.
