Early life and education
Dmitry Chaplin was born on July 14, 1982, in Rostov-on-Don, Russia. He lives in Los Angeles, California, as of 2020. He graduated from School #8 in Rostov-on-Done and Minnetonka High School in Minnetonka, Minnesota, and then attended Brooklyn College in Brooklyn, New York, for one semester.
Career
Chaplin competed in the U.S. National Amateur Dancesport Championships in Provo, Utah, on March 11, 2006. He partnered with Heidi Groskreutz and was a national finalist in the U.S. National Amateur Dance Championships. Louis van Amstel, his dancing coach since 2004, was partnered with actress Lisa Rinna on the US television show Dancing with the Stars for the Performing Arts.
Chaplin appeared on Season 2 of So You Think You Can Dance in 2006, ranking him in the top twenty contestants cast. His dancing style was described as a male, and several episodes of the show featured parodies of other male contestants requesting Chaplin's assistance.
Chaplin would show his chest when dancing; during one of his later appearances, he deliberately teased the judges with an ending where he held his shirt on.

The judges generally rated his dancing, but call-in votes put him in the bottom three couples each week. Joy Spears and Aleksandra Wojda's first two children were killed together, and Ashlee Nino, a third, was named as cursed after two weeks together, so he was named cursed. During the July 19 show when all the contestants switched partners, Chaplin was partnered with Donyelle Jones. On the results show of July 20, it was discovered that Donyelle had "beaten the curse," but Chaplin and Martha Nichols were unable to beat it on their own; together with Chaplin, he was banned. Chaplin appeared on the Season 2 U.S. live tour and wowed sold-out audiences with his fellow finalists.
Chaplin appeared on Season 3 as Mary Murphy's replacement for the Latin dance portion of the Las Vegas eliminations.
Chaplin performed on May 3, 2007, before the So You Think You Can Dance verdict was announced on May 3, 2007 (Malaysia, Season 1).
