Sofia Boutella (born April 3, 1982) is an Algerian-French dancer, model, and actress.
Boutella is best known for her supporting roles in Hollywood action films, most notably as Gazelle in Kingsman: The Unknown Service (2014), Jaylah in Star Trek Beyond (2016), and Delphine Lasalle in Atomic Blonde (2017). She has since appeared in more leading roles, including Princess Ahmanet in The Mummy (2017), an international assassination in Hotel Artemis (2018), and as the artistic director of a dance troupe in Climax (2018).
Early life
Boutella was born in Algeria's Bab El Oued district to an architect mother and a jazz musician father, Safy Boutella. Seif's brother works as a computer effects artist in the entertainment industry. "The man of the mountains" is her surname. She was raised in a fairly secular household that nurtured artistic expression and creativity. Boutella referred to her childhood as a joyful one, saying she was "blessed to be born into a family that encouraged me to express myself, be fully myself, and let out all sorts of colors that were both alive in my imagination and in my heart."
Boutella began classical dance training when she was five years old, with her family's support. She and her family left Algeria in 1992, at the age of ten, and fled to France. She began rhythmic gymnastics shortly after, becoming a member of France's national team at the age of 18.
Personal life
Fred Astaire, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Daniel Day-Lewis, and Bob Fosse have all been cited as artistic influences by Boutella.
Boutella has been living in France for the majority since age 10, but she has strong links to her Algerian roots and identity:
Boutella was in a relationship with Irish actor Robert Sheehan from March 2014 to October 2018.
Dancing career
Boutella grew up in Paris and discovered many more dance styles, especially hip hop and street dance, which intrigued her for more "freedom" in comparison to ballet and gymnastics' more disciplined styles. She joined the Vagabond Crew, which won the Battle of the Year in 2006, and later became a member of "Chienne de Vie and Aphrodites," a spin-off group.
Her breakthrough as a dancer came in 2007, when she was chosen for Nike Women's "Keep Up" campaign, posing as a role model of femininity and hip-hop. This was a major boost to her career and culminated in more work alongside actresses such as Madonna and Rihanna. She cites her experience with Madonna in helping her learn English.
Boutella was enthusiastically auditioned for the Michael Jackson This Is It concert, but she was unable to attend due to the Madonna tour's cancellation, which coincided with the Jackson tour. She was the main protagonist in Michael Jackson's music video for "Hollywood Tonight" in February 2011.
Acting career
Boutella rehearsed with respected Spanish choreographer Blanca Li, beginning at the age of 17. She began dancing in film and television shows, as well as in retail and concert tours.
Eva was the lead actress in the drama film StreetDance 2 (2012), the sequel to StreetDance 3D (2010).
Boutella decided to study acting after 12 years as a dancer. She deliberately held off auditions for lead roles, preferring to play supporting characters in order to learn from more experienced actors. She appeared in Kingsman: The Undiscovered Service, her first big film, which launched her career as an actress in 2015. Jaylah, the alien warrior in Star Trek Beyond, appeared on Star Trek Beyond one year later.
In the David Leitch film Atomic Blonde, she played a French cover agent, James McAvoy, John Goodman, and Toby Jones. She appeared in The Mummy for the fourth year in a row, as well as Tom Cruise, Russell Crowe, and Annabelle Wallis.
Boutella's reputation soared starting in 2018, and she began to appear in more central roles. In the near-future action crime thriller Hotel Artemis, she appeared alongside Michael B. Jordan and Michael Shannon in the HBO drama film 'Nice', and portrayed French contract killer 'Nice'.
In October 2019, she appeared in episode 5 of Amazon Prime's Modern Love's first season.
Boutella was cast in Netflix's sci-fi adventure film Rebel Moon in November 2021.
