High school career

In West Little River, Florida, a freeman attended Miami Central High School. He aided the Rockets football team in winning 308 yards on 38 attempts, just 20 yards shy of breaking a state championship game record. He ran for 2,208 yards and 26 touchdowns as a senior while also rushing yards and six touchdowns in the last two games of the state playoffs.

Rivals.com's top-ranked recruiter, he was rated as the best running back in the country. On June 24, 2010, he pledged to Florida State.

College career

From 2011 to 2013, the freeman attended and played college football for Florida State.

Freeman, a freshman at Florida State, was a major contributor to the Seminoles' running game in the 9-0 season. He had two games with over 100 yards and a streak of four games with at least one rushing touchdown between the end of October and the beginning of November. As a freshman, he had 120 passes for 579 yards and eight touchdowns. He was the Seminoles' top rusher in major categories throughout the season.

Freeman shared the backfield primarily with James Wilder Jr. and Chris Thompson as a sophomore. He played in two 100+ yards in three games and three games with two rushing touchdowns. Florida State set a 10–2 record on regular season and qualified for the ACC Championship. In the 21–15 victory over Georgia Tech, he had 59 passing yards and a rushing touchdown. He had 111 passes for 660 yards and eight touchdowns as a sophomore in 2012.

Freeman, a junior, put on a solid and consistent run for the Seminoles. Freeman completed a streak of ten straight games against Nevada in their second game of the season and his third game against Bethune-Cookman. For the 98 receiving yards and touchdown touchdown, he had 78 rushing yards and two more rushing touchdowns against Miami. Freeman, a junior, was a first-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) pick and helped the Florida State Seminoles beat Auburn by 34–31. He rushed for over 1,000 yards, the first Seminole to do so since Warrick Dunn in 1996. Despite splitting carries with James Wilder, Jr. and Karlos Williams in Florida State's backfield, Freeman had career highs in rushing yards (1,016), receiving yards (278), and touchdowns (11). In each of his three seasons in Tallahassee, he led the Seminoles in rushing.

Freeman announced on January 11, 2014 that he would forego his senior season and join the 2014 NFL Draft.

Professional career

Freeman was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in the fourth round with the 103rd overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. He was the eighth running back to be chosen in the draft.

Freeman spent time with fellow running backs Steven Jackson, Jacquizz Rodgers, and Antone Smith during his rookie season in 2014. Freeman's NFL debut against the New Orleans Saints in Week 1 at the Georgia Dome was for 15 yards and two receptions for 18 yards. He scored his first touchdown against the Detroit Lions in Week 8, with Matt Ryan's seven-yard reception in the first quarter. He scored his first rushing touchdown against the New Orleans Saints in Week 16, a 31-yard rush in the third quarter. During his rookie season, he played in all 16 games, but not in any. He had 248 passing yards on 65 plays, 225 receiving yards on 30 plays, one rushing touchdown, and two touchdowns.

In Week 3, Freeman made his first appearance in his career against the Dallas Cowboys on September 27. Freeman made a huge play against the Cowboys, rushing for a record-breaking 141 yards and three touchdowns on 30 carries. Against the Houston Texans, he rushed for three touchdowns again this week to finish with 68 passing yards. He rushed for 153 yards in the first game against the Washington Redskins, the first in a three-game streak of 100 yards against Weeks 4-7. Freeman finished off three carries against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 11 before leaving in the first half with a concussion. Freeman had 1,634 yards from scrumage (5th in the NFL), 14 all-purpose touchdowns (1st) with 1,056 passing yards (7th) and 11 rushing touchdowns (1st) by the end of the season (st). He ranked third among NFL running backs in both receptions (73) and receiving yards (58) along with three receiving touchdowns. Freeman was first selected to the Pro Bowl in his career and was named a Second-Team All-Pro following the season. In the 2016 Pro Bowl, Freeman was named one of the captains, alongside Geno Atkins of the Cincinnati Bengals, for Team Irvin. He was ranked as the 50th best player in the NFL and fifth best running back by his fellow athletes on the NFL Top 100 Players of 2016.

The Falcons were aided by Freeman and Tevin Coleman to lead a spirited running back pairing that would help with a historic offense in 2016. He had 14 attempts for 155 yards and five receptions for 55 yards and a touchdown against the New Orleans Saints in Week 3. In the 48-33 victory over the Carolina Panthers, he scored his first rushing touchdown of the season. In Week 12, he churned out 60 yards and two touchdowns on 15 attempts against the Arizona Cardinals. He had another two-touchdown game against the Kansas City Chiefs on September 28 for 56 yards in the next game, a 29–28 loss. In Week 41-13 over the San Francisco 49ers, Freeman passed for 139 yards on 20 carries for three touchdowns, and was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week. The freeman was selected as the second original pick behind Ezekiel Elliott and David Johnson, and he was a key role in the Falcons' 11-5 record and #1 seed in the National Football Championship. Freeman had 14 passes for 45 yards and scored his first career postseason touchdown, as well as four catches for 80 yards in the Divisional Round 36–20 win over the Seattle Seahawks. Freeman had 14 attempts for 42 yards and four receptions for 42 yards in the NFC Championship's 44-21 victory over the Green Bay Packers, scoring his first career postseason receiving touchdown. Freeman will have 11 passes for 75 yards, two receptions for 46 yards, and his first touchdown for either team in Super Bowl LI, where the Falcons lost 34–28 in overtime to the New England Patriots. Freeman signed a five-year, $41.25 million contract extension with the Falcons on August 9, 2017, becoming the highest paid running back in the NFL. He was held to 37 rushing yards on 12 runs against the Chicago Bears in Week 1, but he had a touchdown in the 23-17 victory. In Week 2, he had 84 rushing yards and two touchdowns against the Green Bay Packers in Week 43. Freeman's first touchdown was the first ever touchdown in the history of the new stadium. He had 106 passing yards and a touchdown against the Detroit Lions in Week 3. Though Tevin Coleman was forced to play in the first four games, he had five rushing touchdowns to lead the NFL. In Week 15, he had 22 attempts for 126 yards and a touchdown against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In the 22–10 victory over the Carolina Panthers in the regular season finale, he had 23 rushing yards, 85 receiving yards, and a touchdown. The Atlanta Falcons made the playoffs after finishing with a 10–6 record and a playoff appearance. In the 2017 season, Freeman had 865 passing yards, seven touchdowns, 36 plays, 317 receiving yards, and one receiving touchdown. In the 26–13 victory over the Los Angeles Rams, he had 66 passing yards and a rushing touchdown. In the 15–10 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the Divisional Round, he had a receiving touchdown. Freeman's fifth straight postseason game with a touchdown was marked by the touchdown. He was ranked 70th by his peers on the NFL Top 100 Players of 2018.

Freeman sustained a knee injury in Week 1 and missed the next three games. In Week 5, he returned to work after injuring his foot and experiencing soreness in his groin. Freeman required groin surgery but later learned that he missed the following week. On October 16, 2018, he was put on the injured reserve.

Freeman had 118 scrimmage yards and two touchdowns in Week 6 against the Arizona Cardinals, defeating the 33-34 loss. Freeman threw a punch at Aaron Donald during Week 7 against the Los Angeles Rams, and was suspended. The Falcons lost 37–10. Without Freeman. In Week 16, Freeman had 127 scrimmage yards, one rushing touchdown, and one touchdown pass. Freeman finished with 656 passing yards and two touchdowns in the 2019 season, along with 59 receptions for 410 yards and four receiving touchdowns. Freeman was released by the Falcons on March 16, 2020.

Freeman's one-year, $3 million deal with the New York Giants was signed on September 23, 2020. In Week 5, against the Dallas Cowboys, he scored his first rushing touchdown as a Giant. He was placed on inactive reserve with an ankle injury on November 13, 2020. By the time he was on the reserve/COVID-19 list and moved back to the injured reserve on December 17. He was scheduled to return from injured reserve the next day and began training with the team again. He did not return before the regular season, but the Giants cut Freeman on January 7, 2021. He appeared in five games and had 54 attempts for 172 passing yards and one rushing touchdown, as well as seven receptions for 58 receiving yards.

Freeman was signed to the Buffalo Bills' practice squad on January 12, 2021. He served on the squad's practice squad until the end of the season on February 1, 2021.

Freeman signed with the New Orleans Saints on August 1, 2021. On August 31, 2021, he was released.

Following J. K. Dobbins, Justice Hill, and Gus Edwards' absence, the Baltimore Ravens signed Freeman on their practice squad on September 9, 2021. Following Trenton Cannon's release, the Ravens signed Freeman to their active roster on September 16, 2021. Freeman played in 16 of the 17 games and five touchdowns, as well as 34 touchdowns for 190 yards and one receiving touchdown.
