Devin Townsend Life

Devin Garrett Townsend (born May 5, 1972) is a Canadian singer, songwriter, and record producer.

He formed extreme metal band Strapping Young Lad from 1994 to 2007, and he performed as a solo artist throughout his career. Townsend was discovered by a record label in 1993 and asked to do lead vocals on Steve Vai's album Sex & Religion after appearing in a number of heavy metal bands in high school.

Townsend was discouraged by what he found in the music industry and vented his dissatisfaction with the solo album Heavy as a Really Heavy Thing, which was released under the guise Strapping Young Lad.

He assembled a band under the name and released the critically acclaimed City in 1997.

Since then, he has released three more studio albums with Strapping Young Lad, as well as solo recordings released under his own independent record label, HevyDevy Records. Townsend's solo albums, which are a mash-up of hard rock, progressive metal, ambient, and young, have a diverse lineup of supporting artists.

He formed the Devin Townsend Band in 2002, a dedicated band that performed and toured for two of his solo debuts.

He disbanded both Strapping Young Lad and the Devin Townsend Band in 2007, deciding to spend more time with his family rather than touring.

He began recording again after a two-year absence, and the Devin Townsend Project was announced shortly.

The project began with a collection of four albums, each published in a different style from 2009 to 2011.

Townsend's under the new moniker's reign began to record and tour until January 2018. Townsend has released twenty-three studio albums and three live albums as a result of his bands and projects.

Townsend's trademark production style, which features a heavily multitracked wall of sound, has been compared to Robert Fripp and Frank Zappa's.

His vocal performances range from screaming to an opera-esque rendition.

Townsend's musical style is rooted in metal, and his collections are intended to show particular aspects of his personality.

Personal life

Townsend is married to Tracy Turner, who started dating when he was 19. On October 4, 2006, she gave birth to their first son, Reyner Liam Johnstan Townsend. Townsend and his family reside in Coquitlam, Vancouver.

Townsend has been a vegetarian for ethical reasons since the 1990s, but does not identify himself as an activist. In interviews, he admitted to suffering from depression. Around 1998, he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, which was unintentionally exacerbated by his alcohol and opioid use at the time; he's been sober and free of anti-psychotic drugs since 2007.
