Denyce Graves (born March 7, 1964) is an American operatic mezzo-soprano.
Early life
Graves was born in Washington, D.C., on March 7, 1964, to Charles Graves and Dorothy (Middleton) Graves-Kenner. She is the middle of three children and was raised by her mother on Galveston Street, S.W. in Washington's Bellevue neighborhood. In 1981, she graduated from the Duke Ellington School of the Arts. Graves listened closely at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and the New England Conservatory with Helen Hodam. She spent time at the Wolf Trap Opera Company, which provides further training and experience for young singers who are transitioning between academic study and full-time professional careers. She was accepted by David Gockley in the Houston Opera Studio from 1988 to 1990, where she worked with Elena Nikolaidi.
Career
She made her Metropolitan Opera debut in 1995 and has appeared at several opera houses. Despite the fact that her repertoire is extensive, her signature parts in Carmen and Samson et Dalila are the title roles. Graves appeared on several occasions in "Between the Lions," where she used her talents to teach children sounds of words. At the 55th presidential Inauguration, she performed the patriotic song "American Anthem" during Vice President Dick Cheney's swearing-in ceremonies and President George W. Bush's second term in office on January 20, 2005.

On Voce di Donna, the vocal classical music channel of XM Satellite Radio, she hosted various opera singers in 2005. Graves appeared on "The Tony Kornheiser Show radio program" with her version of the "Mailbag Theme."
She appeared in Margaret Garner's world premiere in 2005, an opera by Richard Danielpour and Toni Morrison.
In May 2010, Graves conducted a concert with tenor Lawrence Brownlee in the Supreme Court Building for the Supreme Court justices.
