Daniel Rodriguez Life

Daniel Rodriguez (born May 24, 1964) is a Puerto Rican American operatic tenor from New York City.

He was known as "the Singing Policeman" in his former service with the New York City Police Department due to his work as one of the department's designated National Anthem singers.

He was widely praised for his rendition of "God Bless America," which he performed at memorial services and on television in the aftermath of the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Plácido Domingo's formal education was provided as a result.

Rodriguez has released several albums and appeared as lead tenor in several operas.

He appears on a regular basis in favor of his chosen charities, as well as a full domestic and international concert schedule.

Early years

Rodriguez, a native of Brooklyn, New York, was the first of two children born to Carmen and Jose Rodriguez, who had immigrated from Puerto Rico as teenagers. Both Rodriguez' father and grandfather were tenors, and other family members performed various musical instruments. Since seeing the film The Great Caruso, he cites Mario Lanza's singing as an early musical influence.

He began serious study of music at the age of ten. He spent his youth years at the American Youth Repertory Company in Manhattan, then as assistant director under Juilliard's tutelage. He studied with Juilliard's Aldo Bruschi, as well as Miraslov Markoff from the Moscow Ballet and Opera company during his youth. At the age of 16, Rodriguez appeared in Carnegie Hall Del Terzo recital hall.

Rodriguez put music on hold while doing a variety of jobs, including short-order cook, caterer, taxi driver, and postal employee before joining the police force, after he married at 19 and had a son. He returned to music at the age of 25, arranging a band called Broadway Magic, performing around New York at retirement venues, churches, and local charities.

Personal life

Daniel is married to Marla Kavanaugh, a soprano who has appeared on stage and opera throughout the world. She was born in Dunedin, New Zealand, and began her stage career at the age of five. He and his wife often fly together to perform. They have one daughter, who was born in New Zealand in 2009. Daniel has a son and daughter from his first marriage. He enjoys fishing as his favorite hobby, and is also an experienced scuba diver.

Daniel Rodriguez Career

Career highlights

In 1995, Rodriguez joined the New York City Police Academy. He was named as one of the designated National Anthem singers in the NYPD's formal division after performing at his own graduation. Rudolph Giuliani, the mayor of New York City, who had seen Rodriguez perform at various events, used his celebrity to secure an audition for him at the Metropolitan Opera. However, his lack of classical education became an insurmountable obstacle, and the Met fired him after he had only two notes.

Rodriguez was the subject of a Cable News Network special in June 2001 about a New York City police officer who sang at Carnegie Hall. He was driving over the Verrazano Bridge in New York City at the time of the September 11 terrorist attack and was just two blocks away from the World Trade Center when it crashed. "I lived through the horrors of 9/11 and made peace with God several times that day, and said goodbye to my family a few times and decided that I was meant to stick around and do something positive with my life." He'll spend the next several months at Ground Zero, but only after demands to perform at official functions, memorials, and media appearances. On October 23, 2001 at Yankee Stadium, Rodriguez performed "The Star Spangled Banner" at "Prayer for America." In the 75th Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade as a special tribute to the 9/11 attacks, he sang "The Star Spangled Banner" once more.

He was soon on television and talk shows such as "The Today Show," The Early Show, Larry King Live, Late Show with David Letterman, "The Oprah Winfrey Show," and Live with Regis and Kelly. In 2002 and 2005, Christopher Close-up was also interviewed. "Watching the Twin Towers disintegrate didn't make me sing any better," Rodriguez said. But the passion for the music has shifted, and I represent what I represent: the warmth and the sense of national pride that I bring now contributes more to the warmth and joy of national pride than I did before. He appeared at the "Prayer For America" concert on September 23, 2001, recognizing the victims of the September 11 terror attacks. Plácido Domingo, a bill payer, appeared on the bill and invited him to attend the Domingo/Vilar Young Artists Institute in Washington, D.C., for 18 months of opera study. "I wasn't a cop who started singing; I was a cop who became a cop," he says, and he's been given the opportunity to perform." "I sing for those who have lost loved ones."

He performed "God Bless America" with the Berlin Philharmonic in honor of 9-11 at Carnegie Hall's 111th season opening, October 2001. Arif Mardin and Ian Ralfini of Manhattan Records Company also signed him to his first recording deal in October 2001. Rodriguez was the first artist to sign with newly revived Manhattan, EMI's division. In Mardin's life story, he describes Rodriguez as "golden voiced."

At the opening ceremonies of the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah, he sang "God Bless America" for his debut before a worldwide audience. At Heinz Hall, directed by Lucas Richman, his first public concert was supported by a full symphony orchestra. Rodriguez appeared in "The Great American Concert: New York, New York" in August 2002 with John Mauceri as the host.

He appeared on ESPN in 2003 and won the National Anthem at the Indianapolis 500, then returned in 2008 to compete at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the Allstate 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup. Pat Sajak, a CNN anchor, and TV presenter Paula Zahn performed in 2004. Fred Rogers, who is best known to children around the world as Mister Rogers, was joined by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra at Heinz Hall in honor of him.

With his growing success as a performer of both popular and classical music, he left the New York City Police Department in May 2004 to pursue music full-time. Rainier III, Prince of Monaco, died on April 6, 2005, at a Memorial Mass at the Cathedral of Saint Patrick in New York City. Rodrez performed with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra as the host of the Christmas Yuletide Celebration concert series, with Jack Everly principal pops conductor. He appeared at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in 2005.

Appearance at the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, California, in April 2005, was broadcast globally on Hour of Power. Since his first appearance in April 2002, he has been a regular visitor. In June, he made his Boston Pops Orchestra debut at Symphony Hall. In 2005, he appeared at the West Point Cadet Chapel at the United States Military Academy in New York, performing with the cadets on "Into the Fire" on the CD/DVD Stand Ye Steady: Songs of Courage and Inspiration. Rodrez appeared on nationally broadcast QVC in September of that year as part of the company's national television broadcast QVC's promotion of "Into The Fire."

Rodrs appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on September 11, 2006, where he appeared "Amazing Grace" with professional pianist Mike Garson.
