Following the Battle of Okinawa in World War II, the FBI has returned 22 items stolen from Japan after a family from Massachusetts discovered them in their late father's possessions. According to the department, many of the artifacts recovered depicted Okinawan royalty, implying that the pieces were stolen in the final days of World War II. The 22 items discovered in Massachusetts include six painted scrolls from the 18th to the nineteenth centuries - three of which were single units and appear to have been divided into three parts - and a hand-drawn map of Okinawa dating back to the 19th century. Several pieces of pottery and ceramics were also found, including detailed plates and bowls, as well as a turtle statue.
