When Nashville's Phil Tomasino came skating from his right side, he collected the puck along the boards. Tomasino's upper body was seen in front of Gilbert's when his left leg was placed behind Gilbert's right, causing him to lose his balance due to the awkward encounter. Gilbert's skates were up in the air before his head and right shoulder collided on the ice. When medical staff treated Gilbert, he was unable to stand up straight away. Gilbert was led off the ice by his teammates as soon as he woke up.
