Jockey Paul Townend is rewarded with a kiss from his girlfriend after winning the £1million Grand National on joint favourite I Am Maximus in front of 80,000 delighted racegoers

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 13, 2024
I Am Maximus (right) - 'maximus' being Latin for 'greatest' - was a frontrunner among most British bookies with odds of 7/1. It means they've had a tough day - with little comfort drawn from the fact several other favourites fell early and throughout the race. As Townend rode the champion Bay Gelding back to the stables he rubbed his eyes in disbelief (left) and planted a kiss on the cheek of his girlfriend, equine sports therapist Anna Paoletti (inset). Townend said it had been 'an unbelievable race' on 'an unbelievable horse', with a pinch of luck on his side, while the horse's trainer, the legendary Willie Mullins, said the pair had been 'biding (their) time' before the end.

On the floor at Aintree racecourse in Liverpool, several people were seen enjoying their drinks, perched on each others' shoulders, or even sprawled. Punter wins £200,000 after Galopin Des Champs wins the Cheltenham Gold Cup for the first time

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 17, 2023
The Sun's Betslip detailed a seven-race bet with the possibility of land £1,151,851.74, with the first five races already claimed. The full bet was canceled on Thursday after Shishkin was well-beaten in the Ryanair Chase, with Envoy Allen claiming victory with Rachael Blackmore aboard. However, the punter made it to the final day of the festival, knowing that Galopin Des Champs was just placing, despite being the overwhelming market favourite leading up to the run, would see them rake in a substantial sum from the £5 bet.

The Sun's betting slip shows the particulars of a seven-race bet, with the possibility of winning the first five races already won. The full amount is off now, but Shishkin could only finish second in the County Plate Chase, which is why. The horse started off looking as though it had timed it's run, but it didn't recover after a mistake at the 15th fence. Despite the setback, Galopin Des Champs, who is now 7/4 favorite, will win the Gold Cup on Friday, putting the pundit on to a stunning victory of up to £200,000.

Shishkin will win in Thursday's 2:50 Ryanair Chase, and Galopin Des Champs will advance to the Gold Cup on Friday. Shiskin appears to be a safe bet, with Paddy Power naming the Nico de Boinville-ridden horse as the 10/11 favorite.

Delta Work and Galvin will both qualify for the Grand National, according to Gordon Elliott

The Irishman was another one-two finish, eerily reminiscent of the one he saw in last year's Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase, where Tiger Roll pushed the same champion close. Delta Work displayed his characteristic turn of foot and strength to fight off his closest compatriot and win his second straight title in the competition, with Galvin pushing him close.

Jazzy Matty was neck-and-neck with his opponents as they entered the final straight before pulling his nose ahead as they crossed the finish line. Elliott said, 'I'm absolutely thrilled' after the race.' The horse is a brother to Delta Work, who is obviously a very good chaser for us.
