David Shoenberg Life

David Shoenberg, MBE FRS (4 January 1911 – March 2004) was a British physicist. David Shoenberg, Isaac Shoenberg's uncle, was born in 1911.

Isaac immigrated to the United Kingdom and gained British citizenship, but then moved to Russia, where David was born.

David, on the other hand, was born in the United Kingdom and was taken to Britain as a child.

He was educated at Latymer Upper School, Hammersmith, and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he obtained his doctorate in 1935. Mond Laboratory in Cambridge, Cambridge, where he began his studies into aspects of low-temperature physics and magnetism.

After the war, he was instrumental in the revival of low-temperature physics at Cambridge, rising as the Mond Laboratory's director in 1947.

He served in this capacity until 1973.

He was Professor of Physics at Cambridge University and Head of the Low Temperature Physics Group at Cavendish Laboratory, 1973–78, then Professor Emeritus.

He was also a Life Fellow at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. In 1944, he received the MBE.

He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1953 and was awarded the Hughes Medal in 1995 "for his work on solids' electronic structure, particularly the De Haas Van Alphen effect." In 1940, he married Catherine Felicitee Fischmann; the pair had a son and two daughters.
