David Selby Career

Career

Selby appeared in the film Black Shadows as ghost Quentin Collins in 1968. Selby appeared in "Quentin Collins," the show's second feature film based on the program that was cancelled in 1971, which was released later this year. (He's going to reprise his role from the series in a new series of Dark Shadows audio dramas from Big Finish Productions, which began in 2006).

Selby co-starred with Barbra Streisand in the film Up the Sandbox in 1972. During the 1970s, he appeared in a number of film and television guest performances, including U-Turn (1973), The Super Cops (1974), and Rich Kids (1979), and Kojak (1976). In the Emmy Award-winning miniseries Behind Closed Doors (1977), he appeared alongside an all-star cast.

Selby has played Gary Ewing in the 1980 television series Knots Landing, which eventually went to Ted Shackelford.

Selby was nominated for the Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Supporting Actor in 1980's Raise the Titanic, which, despite the film's established cast, including Jason Robards and Alec Guinness, received a critical reaction from critics and viewers, as well as poor box-office takes.

Selby appeared as the villainous Michael Tyrone in the last season of NBC primetime series Flamingo Road in 1981. Richard Channing, the illegitimate son of Jacqueline Perrault's (Lana Turner) with Angela Channing's husband Douglas Channing, joined the cast immediately after its cancellation in 1982. Richard, who began as an antagonist, became more of a hero and by the end of the season, he was the show's central protagonist (partly due to his health condition). Selby was nominated for six Soap Opera Digest Awards for his role in Richard, with one of which he was honoured. Selby appeared in 209 episodes of the series, second only to co-star Lorenzo Lamas, who was the only actor to appear in all 227 episodes.

Selby appeared in numerous film and television roles during the 1990s and 2000s, including Dying Young (1991), White Squall (1996), Surviving Christmas (2004), and episodes of series such as Cold Case (2006) and Mad Men (2009). Selby appeared onstage with Barack Obama and portrayed Lincoln in a scene from the play The Heavens Are Hung in Black, commemorating Abraham Lincoln's birthday in 2009. (Selby had also appeared in a 1998 episode of "Beautiful Dreamer" by an Angel).

Selby appeared in the 2012 film adaptation of Dark Shadows, one of four cast members from the original series to appear in the film. In the same year, he appeared in Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, a two-part direct-to-video animated film version of the 1986 graphic novel The Dark Knight Returns starring Commissioner James Gordon.

Selby appeared in FX's Marvel Comics X-Men drama, Legion, in 2017.
