The Marion County mayor has defended the cops who searched a local Kansas newspaper and elderly co-owner Joan Meyer's house, as well as the judge for authorizing the search warrant. When the police department raided the Marion County Record office on August 11, Mayor David Mayfield said he was not sure what they did wrong. Mayfield made the argument that if there were any questions or concerns about the search warrants, the county attorney or judge should have dismissed them ahead of time. It was signed off by Magistrate Judge Laura Viar, and Marion Police Chief Gideon Cody personally led the raids.
