It's like Benidorm! Fury as upmarket David Lloyd lures 'undesirables' who 'make the clubs look more like council-run leisure centres

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 21, 2024
Members of David Lloyd clubs are up in arms after the chain began to admit 'undesirables' on cheap temporary memberships who act like 'it's Benidorm' inside the premises, it was reported yesterday. David Lloyd, which runs more than 100 health clubs across the UK that can cost more than £200 a month in membership fees, is facing the backlash over a two-week trial promotion, which can be had for as little as £14. Some 'two-weekers' signing up allegedly make the clubs look 'more like a council-run leisure centre', with threats, thefts and damage to cars among the negative behaviour said to have occurred. David Crutchlow, 45, told The Times that he was too scared to return to his local branch in Rugby after complaining about a gang of men making too much noise in the Jacuzzi. The men then 'pushed [him] in the changing room where there is no CCTV', he claimed.

Verve Nutrition, Oliver Cookson's start-up business, is unable to imitate his multimillion-pound MyProtein's success

MyProtein was launched in 2004 with just £500, before transferring it to THG for millions a few years later. Now he wants to take on a new industry, but can he replicate the same success?

Changing face of UK's high streets: How nearly 5,000 stores have shut in past year after retailers including Wilko, Paperchase and M&Co shut their doors - while Greggs, Domino's and Costa thrive

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 14, 2024
Last year, nearly 5,000 stores closed across the United Kingdom after Wilko, Paperchase, and Lloyds pharmacy closed. However, a surge in new stores opened by thriving UK retailers, including Greggs, Domino's, and Costa last year, even if this hasn't been weighed by the number of closures. According to new reports from accounts PwC, the new stores were mainly coffee drive-through franchises, bubble tea shops, fast food franchises, and discount stores located outside of city centres. Last year, more than 14,000 stores closed across the United Kingdom, an average of 39 per day, with a net decrease of nearly 5,000 shops, or 14 per day. Fashion chains M&Co and Joules, stationers Paperchase, general store Wilko, and pub group Stonegate, which sells Slug & lettuce, saw the largest decrease in the number of outlets due to financial challenges or restructures. Discount store Aldi, Costa Rica, and Starbucks were among the new stores that were seen, as well as fast food franchises Greggs and Domino's.

Why can't there be gyms just for overweight women like me! I'm 18 years old, and this is what happened when I first tried to work out with the delectable mummies

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 14, 2024
Earlier this year, I was soaking in a friend's chin-deep bathtub while house-sitting when realizing that I couldn't really get out. So, reader, I have paid the ultimate price. For the first time in many decades, I started a gym with a heavy heart, thighs, and hips.

In a tumultuous hotel, a Latvian gunman carrying a Vendetta mask terrifies visitors by brandishing a rifle

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 13, 2024
Romans Vodcics (right), 31, had been staying at The Raven guest house in Corby (inset) on September 17 last year when he was asked to leave for being rude to employees. But rather than doing as he was ordered, the Latvian national returned to his room and purchased the realistic-looking Glock rifle, as well as the mask, which was also adopted by the worldwide 'Anonymous' internet hacker movement. He exploded into the bar and walked through while clutching the rifle and wearing the mask (left) before walking outside and pointing the dummy weapon at the hotel.

As the centurions' under fire actor joins Jonny Bairstow, DAVID LLOYD discusses what he thinks suits Jonny Bairstow best

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 3, 2024
DAVID LLOYD: Jonny Bairstow will do something special to celebrate his birthday in England's Hundred Club this week. The 100th Test in Dharamshala may be a dead rubber against India, but Jonny's account would be regarded as a major achievement, not just for himself but also for his families. I know his mum Janet is a natural performer because she served as an cricket administrator at Yorkshire for a long time, when my wife Diana held a similar role at Lancashire.

JPR Williams, the Lions and Wales legend, was remembered as a'revolutionary' rugby player, family man, and scholar at his funeral service... with Welsh greats among hundreds of crowds at Llandaff Cathedral

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 1, 2024
The country said goodbye to one of its true rugby greats on the same day as Wales' patron saint, David, and Llandaff Cathedral was a living tribute to JPR Williams on the day. The timing could not have been more appropriate. Williams, who tragically died in January at the age of 74, may not have been happier to be Welsh. On St David's Day and the day before what would have been the legendary former full-back's 75th birthday, his funeral was held (FRI). Williams will always be remembered for his daring rugby exploits. However, we were reminded that he was more than merely a sportsman at his funeral service in a historic Cardiff venue yesterday (FRI). Williams was also a doctor, a loving husband, and father, as well as a natural entertainer.

DAVID LLOYD: England bowlers still have 'L' plates on but now it's batsmen with a test to pass against India on pancake of a Rajkot pitch

www.dailymail.co.uk, February 12, 2024
If you're looking back on the first two Tests of this series, it's been a case of win the toss, win the game. However, if the Rajkot pitch acts as it has in its two previous outings as a Test field, it will not be nearly as important this week. Taking a look at the scorecard from 2016-17: England 537 plays India 488. The Indians piled up 649 for nine declared versus the West Indies two years later. It's been in recent history that it's as flat as a pancake. Today is one of the year's best days, and lemon and syrup make the best filling for yours. It's certainly the No. 1 pick at Lloyd Towers.

However, fans will be able to hear his distinct gravelly voice once more after his family decided to Boom Rock and restored it with technology.

With Ben Stokes at the wheel, England's Test victory is as good as it gets... Mail Sport's analysts agree that this team will go far beyond infinity and beyond

www.dailymail.co.uk, January 29, 2024
England won by a 190-run deficit in Hyderabad on Sunday to defeat India in a historic Test victory. Ben Stokes' side recovered after a difficult first two days with a spectacular 196 from Ollie Pope. In the first Test, debutant spinner Tom Hartley spun his team to a 28-run victory.

DAVID LLOYD: I told Rob Key that match-winner Tom Hartley could cut it out in India - I was right! His style suits the conditions down to a tee

www.dailymail.co.uk, January 28, 2024
DAVID LLOYD: I made a witty comment that you don't need flighty English-style spinners but rather tall ones who strike the pitch hard. Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin, two bowlers, have been bowling. Hartley was part of the selection process for me. Hartley and his fellow left-armer Jadeja bowled at 60 mph, the optimum speed for the weather. At 49-50, Shane Warne began to bowl his leg-spin. Remember, Warne averaged 43 with the ball in India, way down on his career record of 25. To get the ball off the ground, you have to throw it into the air.

NASSER HUSSAIN: A lack of spin control makes it so difficult for a skipper, it was evident that England newcomers Rehan Ahmed and Tom Hartley lacked that nassity

www.dailymail.co.uk, January 26, 2024
NASSER HUSSAIN: When David Lloyd, our long-serving England columnist, was England coach, he used to say, 'Whoever's in the opposition doing your job, be better than him.' Phil Tufnell, who was up against Shane Warne, was thinking about Spare. Or imagine Robert Croft's face as Muttiah Muralitharan was spinning it four yards. Likewise, discussing England's new spin incumbents alongside India's outstanding trio of Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and Axar Patel is a chalk and cheese talk. Given the fact that Jack Leach is returning from a long-term injury, teenage Rehan Ahmed is playing his second Test and Tom Hartley is on debut, it would be unfair to compare.

Ben Stokes admits he didn't think about flying to India until British Pakistani spinner Shoaib Bashir got his visa, but says the country has 'never a chance' of England against the country's first Test

www.dailymail.co.uk, January 24, 2024
Ben Stokes, England's captain, has admitted that he would not travel to India until Shoaib Bashir's visa problems were resolved. Bashir, a 20-year-old British Muslim of Pakistani descent, was forced to fly back to the UK to get his visa rubber stamped after being refused admission to India, effectively leaving him out of contention for the first Test in Hyderabad, which begins tomorrow. Bashir's treatment left Stokes clearly disgruntled, according to his pre-match press conference, and he announced that the team should not fly to India without a teammate.

DAVID LLOYD: Shoaib Bashir's visa snub resembles the one from Basil D'Oliveira's apartheid row... the ECB should consider moving the England team home

www.dailymail.co.uk, January 23, 2024
COMMENT: The ECB has made a decision over Shoaib Bashir's treatment - either ignore it and go forward, inform India that they will not begin the Test series until their full complement of players is present, or bring the England team home. They should be considering very carefully, and the latter two options should most certainly be on the agenda. Let's look back more than 50 years and the choice of mixed-race player Basil D'Oliveira as a replacement for England during the 1968-69 tour of apartheid South Africa. The MCC called off the tour because the South Africans made it clear that D'Oliveira will not be able to return to his homeland as part of the team.

DAVID LLOYD: India should have been told 'play on this strip or forfeit the game'... the ICC was awful at not letting them determine what pitch they wanted in the World Cup semi-finals

www.dailymail.co.uk, November 15, 2023
DAVID LLOYD: It has always been in the laws that World Cup semi-finals and finals should be played on new pitches, as far as I'm aware, but I'm aware there was an agreement that was reached this year for the final to be played on a different pitch than was used for the tournament's first game. We can safely conclude this discussion right now. This World his Cup does not belong to India. They are not the hosts. It's just being staged in their world. It's the ICC's match, not something to do with anyone else.

DAVID LLOYD: Hallelujah!I don't pay to watch cricketers dwardle!Sri Lanka's Angelo Mathews should have been ready to bat against Bangladesh - players should not be going down mid-over for a chat

www.dailymail.co.uk, November 6, 2023
DAVID LLOYD: I have one thing to say about Angelo Mathews' groundbreaking dismissal on Monday: Hallelujah! It's about time. I haven't paid the money to watch cricketers tumping about aimlessly. Mathews should have been up for battle because he knew he was coming back for his fourth Sri Lankan wicket, and he had two minutes to face up after the fourth wicket collapsed. What is the problem? Doing nothing is causing a lot of players to faff about. So get to it.

England hasn't had any preparations for their 2019 World Cup victory. What shape are they in?

Baby boomers reveal the things that REALLY annoy them - from banning songs, banks closing and having to pay for parking on an app

www.dailymail.co.uk, September 17, 2023
Baby boomers' number one complaint is banning old music due to their lyrics (right, Queen's Fat Bottomed Girls, who were recently removed from their greatest hits album). According to new reports, drivers were compelled to pay for parking on an app, bank branches closing (Barlcays recently announced that they are closing branches) and not being able to locate a doctor's appointment was among the top niggles for over 50s. Boom Radio, the nation's largest radio station aimed at baby boomers, conducted the survey, asking hundreds of thousands of its 531,000 weekly listeners about their pet peeves. Respondents were asked 31 questions and offered the option of either "very annoying" or "quite irritating," as answers were given. Lack of access to public loos was another common gripe (bottom right)

An NHS boss who used his deceased wife's email to steal more than £500,000 from the taxpayer to finance his luxury lifestyle has been sentenced to prison for his luxury lifestyle

www.dailymail.co.uk, August 31, 2023
An NHS boss has been sentenced to three years and eight months for diverting more than £500,000 from the taxpayer to live a life of extraordinary luxury. Thomas Elrick, 56, (pictured) submitted a string of bogus invoices to the UK's national health service, as well as using his deceased wife's email address to cover his tracks. At Harrow Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), Elrick was hired as the assistant managing director for planned and unscheduled care, where he had the power to approve invoices up to £50,000. Tree of Andre Therapy Services Limited, a forensic firm, was allowed 28 separate payments totaling £564,484 to a ghost company. He used the money to jet around the world, dine in top restaurants, and stayed in five-star hotels in Maldives, Dubai, and Singapore.

Since a toddler, three years old, drowned in a swimming pool on a day when only one part-time lifeguard, 17, was working, David Lloyd Leisure Centre in Birmingham has been fined £2.5 million for health and safety concerns

www.dailymail.co.uk, August 1, 2023
Rocco Wright (pictured left) in Leeds, West Yorkshire, was discovered face down by his father Steven at the bottom of the pool by his father Steven at a David Lloyd Leisure centre (pictured right) in April 2018. While attempting to coordinate his sister's swimming lessons, the child was stood at the pool with his father and sister. Rocco was no longer next to him and was seen at the bottom of the pool. Mr Wright soon realized that Rocco was no longer near him and saw him at the bottom of the pool. He was pulled out of the pool and revived his confidence, but the youngster was declared dead at Leeds General Infirmary the next day.
