David Lang Life

David Lang (born January 8, 1957) is an American composer who lives in New York City.

He was named the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for Music for The Little Match Girl Passion, which went on to win the Best Small Ensemble Award in 2010.

For "Simple Song #3," from the film Youth, he was nominated for an Academy Award.

Early life and education

Lang was born in Los Angeles, California. Lang is of Jewish descent. He played trombone in his youth. After completing his undergraduate degree at Stanford University, he moved to Iowa; "There was a professor in composition at the University of Iowa named Martin Jenni," he says; he had come to Stanford as a leave substitute to teach for a semester. And I just thought he was amazing. He knew a lot of stuff that I hadn't heard of before. When I first heard about grad school, I went to Iowa. I was delighted I did. It was really a golden age. I absolutely adored it."

Lang obtained a Doctorate of Musical Arts at Yale University in 1989. Henri Lazarof, Lou Harrison, Richard Hervig, Jacob Druckman, Hans Werner Bresnick, and Martin Bresnick are among Jenni's teachers. Lang co-founded Bang on a Can in 1987 with Julia Wolfe and Michael Gordon. He joined the Yale School of Music composition faculty in 2008. He was invited to the Institute for Advanced Study as the Institute's Artist in Residence in 2016, a position he still holds to this day.
