Jacob Druckman Life

Jacob Raphael Druckman (June 26, 1928 – May 24, 1996) was an American composer born in Philadelphia.

Druckman, a Juilliard School graduate, worked with Vincent Persichetti, Peter Mennin, and Bernard Wagenaar.

He studied with Aaron Copland at Tanglewood in 1949 and 1950 and then continued his studies at the Ecole Normale de Musique in Paris (1954–55).

In comparison to a number of commissions or small ensembles, he spent a considerable amount of time with electronic music.

He received the Pulitzer Prize in 1972 for his first major orchestral work, Windows.

He was composer-in-residence of the New York Philharmonic from 1982 to 1985.

Among other positions, Druckman served at Juilliard, The Aspen Music Festival, Tanglewood College, Bard College, and Yale University.

Druckman died of lung cancer at the age of 67, and he was Connecticut's State Composer Laureate.
