Karp later founded Davidville, where he collaborated with computer engineer Marco Arment on client projects.

Karp was named Best Young Tech Entrepreneur 2009 by BusinessWeek in August 2009 and again in 2010 as one of the top 35 innovators in the world under the age of 35. Yahoo! threw Yahoo! on May 20, 2013. Yahoo and Tumblr had signed a pact. Tumblr will be purchased for $1.1 billion.
Karp remained CEO of the company.
Karp said in November 2017 that he would leave Tumblr before the year's end.
Early life
Born in New York City, Karp grew up on Manhattan's Upper West Side. Barbara Ackerman, a science teacher from San Anselmo, California, and Michael D. Karp, a film and television composer, are his parents. Kevin is his younger brother. When he was 17 years old, his parents divorced. Karp attended the Calhoun School from preschool to eighth grade, where his mother teaches science. He began learning HTML and started designing websites for businesses in 1997. Before dropping out in 2001 and starting homeschooling, Karp went on to attend The Bronx High School of Science for one year. Karp had aspirations of attending college in New York, or going to MIT, and saw homeschooling and doing other projects on the side as a way to impress the colleges. Karp never returned to high school or gained his high school diploma.
Career
Karp began as an intern for animation designer Fred Seibert, the founder of Frederator Studios. Karp's mother had enrolled Seibert's children at the Calhoun School and was a companion with his wife. Karp was fascinated with the work of Frederator's computer scientists, and his visits became regular. Karp began homeschooling and met a math tutor who worked on writing software for winning at blackjack and poker. A Frederator employee recommended Karp for the job when entrepreneur John Maloney needed technical assistance with UrbanBaby, an online parenting forum. Karp completed the job, but it had to be finished in a few days, not in four hours. Maloney made UrbanBaby's head of product and gave him a small amount of equity. Karp moved alone to Tokyo for five months in 2003, when still working for UrbanBaby.
After being sold to CNET in 2006, Karp left UrbanBaby. Karp formed Davidville, a software consulting firm that does both client work and manufacture of Karp's own products and services using funds earned from his share auction. After replying to Karp's Craigslist ad, Marco Arment joined the company as an engineer. Karp had been interested in microblogging for a long time, and was waiting for one of the most popular blogging platforms to debut their own microblogging service. Karp and Arment started working on their own microblogging site after a year of waiting, during a two-week gap in 2006. Tumblr was launched in February 2007 and within two weeks, the service had grown 75,000 users.
Karp's consulting practice in October 2007 was suspended as a result of his Tumblr's activities, which was interfering with his client service. Tumblr, Inc. was renamed in Davidville, and 55% of the company was sold to a tiny group of investors.
Yahoo! was revealed on May 20, 2013. Yahoo and Tumblr had reached a deal. Tumblr will be purchased for $1.1 billion. Tumblr has over 375.4 million blogs as of November 1, 2017. Karp revealed in November 2017 that he would leave Tumblr by the end of the year.
Karp has invested in several companies, including Superpedestrian, Inc., Sherpaa, Inc., and Splash.
