Rishi election nightmare continues: Tories lose control of more true-blue councils

www.dailymail.co.uk, May 3, 2024
Earlier today, the Prime Minister suffered the indignity of seeing of seeing a Labour mayor win in his own constituency as the party hemorrhaged councils and seats. The Conservatives lost Gloucester, which they had previously held for 20 years, and Dorset to the Liberal Democrats . Lord Ben Houchen's re-election on Teesside was a crumb of comfort as the party lost more than half of its councillors up for re-election across England, just months away from a general election. Labour's David Skaith became the inaugural elected mayor of York and North Yorkshire this afternoon, a new position that covers the Prime Minister's Richmond constituency. It was one of the final blows in a day of reverses for the ruling party, including in many areas the Tories need to win to have any chance in the general election later this year. All eyes now turn to mayoral contests in London and the West Midlands, the results of which will be declared on Saturday.

A prince's university fees are among those paid by £200 million taxpayer-funded scheme for foreign students

www.dailymail.co.uk, May 3, 2024
More than £200million of taxpayers' cash has been spent on fully-funded scholarships to foreign students in the past four years, the Mail can reveal. While UK students are saddled with tens of thousands of pounds of debt, Chevening Scholarship recipients have their flights, accommodation and tuition fees paid for. They are available to 'outstanding emerging leaders' from across the world to pursue one-year master's degrees in Britain. But many recipients appear capable of paying their own way - with even a Prince from Lesotho among the distinguished Chevening alumni. The Mail can now reveal that the scheme costs taxpayers more than £50million each year, according to figures released under Freedom of Information laws.

European judges to rule over Gibraltar: Brexit deal will mean the Rock would have to follow EU rules to appease Spain, UK ministers admit

www.dailymail.co.uk, May 2, 2024
The Rock territory will also have to follow some EU rules under the agreement, in order to secure a more open border with Spain , the Foreign Office said. Tory MPs have expressed 'considerable alarm' over the concessions the UK has agreed to, and questioned whether British sovereignty of the territory might be compromised as a result of the deal. UK minister for Gibraltar, David Rutley, emphasised to the Commons European Scrutiny Committee that defending the sovereignty of Gibraltar was a 'red line'. The concerns have been raised as Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron is leading talks with the EU in a bid to secure a deal and end the post-Brexit impasse. Why not even the deaths of 39 migrants who suffocated in a lorry have stopped Vietnamese risking all to reach Britain: It's now the fastest-growing nationality on the small boats... and DAVID JONES visits community where nearly 1 in 10 has left for Europe

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 26, 2024
DAVID JONES: after whispering a prayer, Tran Tri Hien (top right) - whose Catholic faith is a legacy of French colonial rule - begins talking to her daughter, whose baptism name was Anna (left), as though she were still alive. 'I like to let her know what's happening in the family and tell her the latest village gossip,' she explains wistfully, through my translator. Watching this poignant scene in the weed-strewn cemetery in Do Thanh, a timeless village surrounded by paddy fields, 170 miles south of the capital Hanoi, one was reminded - if any reminder were needed - of the misery wreaked by illegal mass migration (bottom right, Vietnamese migrants in France hoping to reach Britain).

16-year-olds who have anorexia could be granted right to die, experts warn

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 20, 2024
Teenagers with anorexia could apply for state-backed 'suicide' under 'extremely dubious' laws proposed in Scotland, experts warned last night. Newly published Holyrood legislation would allow NHS patients to request prescriptions for a life-ending cocktail of drugs that induce a coma, shut down the lungs and eventually stop the heart. Supporters of Scotland's Assisted Dying for Terminally Ill Adults (Scotland) Bill insist that the option to choose death over treatment would only be available for the 'terminally' ill - and would give patients more dignity in death. But ethics experts blasted the broad definition of 'terminal' in the laws, which they fear could see those who stand a chance of recovery dying on the NHS. They also say the Bill does not protect against overstretched doctors suggesting that patients consider dying rather than use up precious NHS resources.

The monkey gangs turning this Thai city into a real-life Planet of the Apes, writes DAVID JONES

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 19, 2024
During a long career, I have come face to face with Afghan warlords, murderous Albanian criminals, and razor-wielding thugs who rule the favela slums of Rio de Janeiro. Yet they all seem tame after my encounter, this week, with the Monkey Massif: a huge group of long-tailed macaques who have - with an extraordinary mixture of stealth and aggression - formed into ghetto-like 'gangs' and seized control of an entire city centre in Thailand. For many years, the apes that congregate around the ruined Hindu temple in Lopburi, a historic stop-off on the British backpacker trail, two hours north of Bangkok, were a prized tourist attraction. In their honour, in 1989, a local businessman started the annual 'monkey feast', a lavish banquet at which thousands of visitors vie to please the pampered primates with the most exotic treats. As they are said to descend from a legendary 'monkey warrior' with supernatural powers, they are also revered as deities by many Thais and protected by law from even the slightest human interference.

Did Roman Polanski drug and rape a teenage British actress or is she a vengeful fantasist? As a French court decides whether the fugitive director was wrong to call Charlotte Lewis a liar for publicly claiming he assaulted her, DAVID JONES investigates

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 12, 2024
At 16 years old, Charlotte Lewis had only ever acted in end-of-term plays at her Roman Catholic high school in Finchley, North London. From nowhere, however, she had been summoned to a one-on-one audition with the great Roman Polanski, a filmmaker whose cinematic genius - but also his dark personal story - had brought him global attention. The year was 1983. Casting around for a suitably young and unblemished beauty for his latest movie, Pirates, the Polish-French director had been recommended to screen-test Charlotte by a friend, who managed her London modelling agency. With her raven hair and bewitching eyes - a product of her Chilean, Iraqi, English and Irish parentage - agency boss Karen Smith thought she would be perfect for the role of a kidnapped Spanish ingenue.

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 6, 2024
When hosting Have I Got News For You, Tory MP David Jones (left) accused Clive Myrie (left) of impartiality, having made a jibe against Tory donor Mohamed Mansour (inset). Myrie, 59, referred to Mansour's "unexpected" knighthood, "because at no time had he been quoted as saying he wanted to shoot a black woman." Frank Hester's recent remarks directed at Diane Abbott referred to Frank Hester's remarks. Members of the Tory Party and others have asked whether Myrie is the right option to anchor BBC's election night coverage.

As he did his bit to plug the series, Keane was seen mocking host David Jones in dismay.

RICHARD LITTLEJOHN: The Muslim firebrand has been kicked out of France, but it won't happen in Britain, according to RICHARD LITTLEJOHN. This is way too wrong, vv

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 5, 2024
David Jones, a Muslim preacher who was pulled screaming and kicking out of France, told the Daily Mail's David Jones: It will never happen in Britain. You should repeat that old son. Imam Mahjoub Mahjoubi was arrested in Tunisia within hours of preaching a sermon destroying the French flag and allegedly inciting bigotry against Jews and women. At his house near Avignon, fifteen police officers arrested him. He had been on the first plane out eight hours later. As adieu, there's not so much au revoir as adieu. You may have guessed it right away.
