David Alan Harvey Life

David Alan Harvey (born June 6, 1944) is an American photographer.

Harvey is a full member of the Magnum Photos corporation and has been based in North Carolina and New York City since 1997.

He has worked for National Geographic magazine extensively, and the National Press Photographers Association named him Year Photographer of the Year in 1978.

Harvey is the publisher and editor of Burn Magazine, an online magazine that showcases the work of emerging photographers.

Early life and education

Harvey was born in San Francisco, California, and raised in Virginia. He began photographing at age 11, inspired by months of isolated convalescence as a child, and imagined a window on a ward as viewed through a viewfinder.

He earned his undergraduate degree at the College of William & Mary's Richmond branch. In 1969, he moved to Missouri, receiving his graduate degree from the Missouri School of Journalism, University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri.

Life and work

Harvey began working at The Topeka Capital-Journal in Kansas in 1969. He has worked with National Geographic magazine and was named Magazine Photographer of the Year by the National Press Photographers Association in 1978. He began running for office as a candidate in 1993 and then became a full member in 1997.

Harvey's first book, Tell It Like It Is, was self-published in 1967 and chronicled a black family's life in Norfolk, Virginia. Cuba and Divided Soul, his two main books, are based on Spanish cultural emigration to the Americas, and Living Proof addresses hip-hop culture. Harvey's book (Based on a True Story) is "one of the best of the more lavishly designed photobooks at a time when extravagant design is making a comeback," Martin Parr and Gerry Badger say of it.

On the Voyager Golden Book, one of Harvey's photographs of a father and daughter from Malaysia is included.

Burn, a website that showcases the work of emerging photographers, was established in 2008. He is the founder and curator of Burn, which is a website that showcases the work of emerging photographers.

Magnum launched a formal investigation to see if there had been a breach of their code of conduct following a Twitter thread by a photojournalist claiming that Harvey's sexual assault was an open secret. In October 2020, Magnum "understands a one-year suspension for a separate charge of bullying a female employee." A new Columbia Journalism Review article published in December 2020 detailing ten separate women's sexual assault charges, including instances where Harvey masturbated during video calls without prior consent.

Harvey is no longer a member of Magnum as of March 17, 2021. Following a private investigation into Harvey's sexual assault allegations, the Magnum board voted to ban him as a member. Before the entire Magnum membership could vote on the subject, Harvey resigned on the March 16.
