David Dickinson Life

David Dickinson (born David Gulesserian; 16 August 1941) is an English antiques specialist and television presenter.

Dickinson appeared on the BBC One antiques show Bargain Hunt, where he was succeeded by Tim Wonnacott.

Dickinson appeared on the BBC in 2005 and, since 2006, Dickinson has been hosting Dickinson's Real Deal, an ITV show in the United Kingdom.

Members of the public are bringing antiques and collectables to the show either directly or via auction. He hosted his own daytime chat show The David Dickinson Show in 2010 and then again in 2017, he hosted David Dickinson's Name Your Price for ITV.

Early life

Dickinson began an apprenticeship at an aircraft factory when he was 14, but he soon moved to central Manchester to work in the cloth trade. Dickinson was sentenced to three years in prison for mail-order theft at 19, and he was fined three years in prison for mail-order fraud. The bulk of his sentence was served at Strangeways in Manchester.

Dickinson opened in Manchester with the help of a long-time customer as a silent partner, and the company continued in Manchester until 1991, when, fearing a looming recession, it was closed. Dickinson decided to concentrate on antiques at prestigious fairs, appearing at Olympia and other major antiques shows three or four times a year, specializing in nineteenth and nineteenth century furniture and works of art.

Personal life

Lorne Lesley, a cabaret performer, performed in a nightclub in the 1960s and married in 1968. Lorne gave David an antique regency mourning ring set with a rose cut diamond as a wedding gift. Lorne is of African, Welsh, and Scottish descent; she hails from Tiger Bay, Cardiff. The couple live in Prestbury, Cheshire, and they have two grown-up children and two grandchildren.

Dickinson's nickname is "The Duke," a nod to his wardrobe. Chris Nicolaou, who appeared as a guest on Dickinson's This Is Your Life, was his tailor for forty years.

Dickinson rode a bright blue Bentley Continental GT until May 2008. Dickinson has two cars, one of which was an eco-friendly electric Smart EV and the second a Reliant Regal van; this van was one of the first pair of the sitcom Only Fools and Horses; this van was purchased in 2007 for more than £44,000.

David Dickinson Career

TV career

Dickinson's television appearance at a barbecue in 1998, coincidenced with a chance meeting with a TV show producer at a barbecue, as well as a two-part documentary for the BBC about him and his plans for a show in Olympia. His dark skin (often assumed to be a fake tan) and numerous catchphrases grabbed viewers' attention quickly.

On This Morning and BBC Two's The Antiques Show, Dickinson came to public attention as an antiques expert. His career as a television celebrity began at lunchtimes, with Bargain Hunt on BBC One gaining a large following amongst daytime viewers, including students.

Following the success of the daytime show, a primetime evening version of Bargain Hunt was broadcast for a few years. Dickinson appeared on the daytime version of Bargain Hunt in 2003 and was replaced by Tim Wonnacott on the daytime slot, although Dickinson maintained the primetime, celebrity, and Christmas versions of the show. Dealing With Dickinson on BBC One in 2005, it was cancelled after only one series was shown. After the primetime editions of Bargain Hunt were cancelled, Dickinson left the BBC.

Dickinson joined ITV in 2006 to host Dickinson's Real Deal, which is shown on daytime weekday afternoons. Old episodes are often reprised. The show is touring around the United Kingdom, urging people to come in and either sell their antiques and collectibles for appraisal by an antiques dealer or who can pay for the item in cash. Alternatively, if the dealer's bid is turned down or no attempt is made to buy the object, the participants will gamble and go to auction. If the object fails to meet the dealer's terms or fails to meet its reserve, the participant takes a lower price than the dealer would have agreed. Dickinson's job is to act as a mediator to help the dealers get the best rates from them or assist them in deciding whether or not to decline the offer and take the item to auction.

The David Dickinson Show, a celebrity variety show, was shown on ITV from 17 to ten episodes on May 17. David Dickinson's Name Your Price for ITV was on display in 2017.

Bargain Hunt takes explosive turn as stall holder rages 'get out!' at stunned BBC team - and livid fans are left 'shouting at the screen' by 'rude' snub

www.dailymail.co.uk, September 12, 2024
Bargain Hunt viewers were stunned after Wednesday night's episode of the BBC show took a sudden explosive turn. The new instalment of the popular daytime programme saw presenter Christina Trevanion welcome another red and blue team to battle it out and find the best deals. However, the episode soon descended into chaos when one stall owner took offence to the contestants opinions about an item they were flogging.

SFA's VAR review with Willie Collum taking centre stage was a fine start... but Scottish football now needs more of the same!

www.dailymail.co.uk, September 12, 2024
Willie Collum's long-awaited talk-in over the nuts and bolts of VAR and the role it plays in affecting matchdays offered no lack of valuable answers. It left one residual question, though. Why has it taken us just short of two years to get to this point? Can't everyone see the benefits of making this kind of thing part of the staple diet of the lunatic whirl of Scottish football rather than just an occasional period of sober reflection?
