David Richard Campbell (born February 7, 1948) is a Canadian arranger, composer, and conductor.

He has worked on more than 450 albums, including 21 (Adele), Futuresex/Lovesounds (Justin Timberlake), Invincible (Muse), Fallen and The Open Door (Evanescence), Meteora (Beyoncé), a son of his father Frank, (1983), and several albums by his son Beck, including 21 (Benjael Jackson), Ascen and The Open Door (Muse), B'Day (Beyoncé

Early life and education

Campbell was born in Toronto, Ontario. His father, D. Warren Campbell, was from Winnipeg, Manitoba, but he was studying in Toronto to become a Presbyterian minister. Campbell was later sent to a church in Pittsburgh, carrying his family with him, before settling in Seattle. Campbell started playing the violin at the age of 9. He began in orchestration at age 12, researching Bartók, Schoenberg, and Stravinsky's works.

Campbell went from New York to Los Angeles in the late 1960s after attending the Manhattan School of Music and started studying pop music. He researched The Beatles, Leonard Cohen, and The Rolling Stones, as well as playing bluegrass music for crowds in line for movies in Westwood Village.

Personal life

Campbell has two sons and one daughter: musician Beck Hansen, artist Channing Hansen, and Alyssa Suede.

Pauline Frechette (also Raven Kane) is his husband and he is married to the theater director Pauline Frechette (aka Raven Kane).

Campbell is a long-serving Scientologist.

In 2012, Ron Paul's campaign in the US Presidential election gave him $11,000.

Career

Campbell appeared on his first major album, Tapestry by Carole King, at the age of 23. This led to his first arranger role on King's Rhymes and Reasons. Campbell also performed viola on recording sessions such as Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On" and Bill Withers' "Lean on Me" and "Let's Get It On." Since then, he has produced songs for such as Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Bon Jovi, Metallica, Paul McCartney, Radiohead, Jessie J, Juanes, Tim McGraw, Ricky Martin, Barbra Streisand, and Miley Cyrus.

David has written music for many films, including Joy, Paper Tigers, and Colombia: magia salvaje. He has also produced and orchestrated music for over 80 films, including Annie (2014), Foxcatcher (2014), Fire of Ages (2012), Dreamgirls (2006), North Country (2005), and Brokeback Mountain (2005). On the score for Scott Pilgrim vs. Nigel Godrich in 2010 he worked with Nigel Godrich. The World is a global city. In 2016, he co-composed the Rules of the Game with Pharrell Williams.

At the Hollywood Bowl for Faith Hill, Ray LaMontagne, Beck, Sheryl Crow, Willie Nelson, and The xx, David has guest-conducted the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. He collaborated with Muse on "Survival," the London Olympics' official song. He also worked with Beck on the Lincoln Motor Company's "Hello, Again" ad campaign that included 167 live musicians performing simultaneously. Campbell arranged Radiohead's "15 Step" for the band's 2009 Grammy Awards collaboration with the USC Marching Band. He arranged and orchestrated the soundtrack for Beck's Song Reader concert, which featured many performers, including Childish Gambino, Juanes, Anne Hathaway, John C. Reilly, Jack Black, and Jarvis Cocker. On June 6, 2014, he arranged and orchestrated the Seattle Symphony and Pickwick's Sonic Evolution performance.

He performed as conductor of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra during their one-night appearance with Kiss, which was released on the album Kiss Symphony: Alive IV. Campbell and the orchestra's members wore the iconic Kiss makeup as well as the band's members during the performance.

David made arrangements for Chris Martin's and Corinne Bailey Rae's appearances at Disney Hall, as well as Katy Perry's and Kali Uchis' appearances at the Hollywood Bowl, all of which were conducted by Gustavo Dudamel.

For the 15th anniversary of Our Endless Numbered Days, he arranged and conducted the LA Philharmonic, National Symphony Orchestra, and Cincinnati Orchestra.

For the Broadway musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Shadow, he arranged the song arrangements, dance arrangements, underscoring, and orchestrations.
