David Blaine White (born April 4, 1973) is an American illusionist, endurance artist, and extreme performer.
He is best known for his endurance feats, and he has set and broken several world records. Blaine changed the way magic is seen on television by focusing on spectator reactions.
His idea was to turn the camera on the people watching instead of the performer in order to make the audience watch the show.
"He's taken a craft that has been around for hundreds of years and created something new and fresh with it," the New York Times said. "Blaine will brand his own brand of wizardry," the New York Daily News says.
"The magic he offers operates on an unusually personal level." Penn Jillette called Blaine's first television special, Street Magic, "the biggest breakthrough (in television magic) done in our lifetime" for shifting television viewers' view toward those who see the trick live.
Early life
Blaine was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York City, the son of a single mother, Patrice White, of Russian-Jewish ancestry, and a father of Vietnam War veterans of Puerto Rican and Italian descent. Blaine was four years old when he saw a magician do magic on the subway. He sparked a lifelong fascination with him. He was raised by his mother and attended a Montessori school in Brooklyn. They then moved to Little Falls, New Jersey, where he attended Passaic Valley Regional High School. Blaine's mother died before he was 20 years old, according to one. "British Mother Blaine was 21 years old when she died in 1994." Blaine was 17 years old when he migrated to New York City, Manhattan.
Personal life
Blaine and his estranged son, Alizée Guinochet, had a daughter in 2011 who was born on January 27, 2011.
Following a report published in The Daily Beast in the aftermath of the Me Too movement in 2010, British news outlets announced that London's Metropolitan Police had requested Blaine to travel to the United Kingdom for an interview under caution, despite warnings from former model Natasha Prince that Blaine assaulted her at a Chelsea, West London, in 2004. Blaine "strongly denies" the charges and said he would "fully cooperate" with a police probe, according to his counsel. After an investigation, detectives were unable to take further action.
Blaine was investigated by the New York City Police Department in April 2019 for allegations that he sexually assaulted at least two people, although no charges were made and he was not charged with a criminal offense.
