Davey Johnstone Career

Career

Johnstone's first appearance on the album Another Round was with Noel Murphy in 1968, where he received his first album credit on the album Another Round. By 1969, Johnstone had found regular work as a session guitarist, where he began to branch out and explore new genres of music, as well as experiment with a variety of musical styles. As Lyell Tranter (one of the two guitarists in Magna Carta) left the band, Johnstone took his place as a member. He released several albums with them beginning in 1970 (named after the street where he lived in Long Hanborough, Oxfordshire) and also contributed to Songs from Wastes Orchard (1971) (named after the street where he lived, Oxfordshire), as well as a live album titled In Concert.

Johnstone performed a variety of instruments during his Magna Carta time, including guitar, mandolin, sitar, and dulcimer. During this period, Dudgeon was spotted by producer Gus Dudgeon, who requested Johnstone to appear on Bernie Taupin's 1971 solo album, which culminated in a Skype meeting with Johnstone and, eventually, Johnstone's participation in Johnstone's 1971 album Madman Across the Water, after which he was invited to join Elton John's band as a full member. Previously, the Elton John Band featured John himself, bassist Dee Murray, and drummer Nigel Olsson.

Honky Chateau's debut album as a full-time member of his band was released on September 14, 1999, on which he performed electric and acoustic guitars, banjo, and mandolin, as well as singing backing vocals with Murray and Olsson.

He appeared on "What's for Us," and played acoustic and electric guitar on several tracks, as well as sitar on the song "Visionary Mountains" in 1972.

In 1973, Johnstone released a solo album, Smiling Face, and formed Smiling Face, a short-lived band formed in China, which released an eponymous album in 1977.

And though working with others like Stevie Nicks, Meat Loaf, and Alice Cooper in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Johnstone was never far from Elton's projects, and after his reunion with original bandmates Nigel Olsson and Dee Murray full-time on 1982's "Jump Up" tour, he has never been banned from an Elton John album track or tour.

In 1990, Johnstone met with lyricist Steve Trudell for the first time. The two bands formed Warpipes, which featured current and former Elton John band members Nigel Olsson, Bob Birch on drums, Guy Babylon on keyboards, and Billy Trudel as vocalist, with music and lyric in place. Warpipes' only album, Holes in the Heavens, was released in 1991 by the name Artful Balance Records. This album was re-released on Bridge Recordings when Artful Balance Records folded. The album name was changed to simply "warpipes" and the song list was slightly modified.

Addison Steel's Stormy Blue, a 1991 edition of Johnstone, in which he played guitar, mandolin, sitar, and banjo, as well as doing vocals. Guy Babylon, a producer, joined keyboard arrangements, with drummer Nigel Olsson and Billy Trudell contributing percussion and vocals respectively.

Davey Johnstone, a Johnstone guitar video produced in 1996, Johnstone released a series called "Star Licks Master Sessions for Star Licks Productions, in which he performs a variety of Johnstone hits, joined by Billy Trudel on vocals and Bob Birch on bass.

While on tour with John, Johnstone, and later Elton John bandmate and former Hellecasters guitarist John Jorgenson, John Jorgenson spent a significant portion of their off time on recording Crop Circles, an album of acoustic instrumentation that was released in 1998.

Johnstone appeared at the Elton John Band's 2000th show on June 10, Glasgow, Scotland. He is currently serving as John Maguire's musical director, in addition to his guitar work, appearing with Nigel Olsson and John Mahon; before Birch's death in August 2012.

From Stevie Nicks' album 24 Karat Gold: Songs from the Vault, he appeared on "Belle Fleur" and "If You Were My Love" on 2014. Nicks appeared on many songs from her 1981 album Bella Donna's collection of Nicks.

Johnstone appeared with Elton John at the first of two Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour stops at the SaskTel Centre in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, on October 1, 2019.
